This is a fully benefited, full-time Harvard University position that has been funded through June, 2026. There is the possibility of renewal, contingent on funding, university priorities and satisfactory job performance.

The Collaboration Architecture and Engineering team is comprised of a group of dedicated engineers with a passion for collaboration, both in team culture and in technology. As a member of this team, you will work alongside seasoned engineers with a team first approach to architecting and engineering solutions to enable and empower Harvard University to achieve excellence thought powerful collaboration tools. This team strives to stay in the forefront of emerging technologies while keeping a pulse on platform and data security and the many needs of our faculty, students, and staff at Harvard.  

Other responsibilities include performing expert level build, configuration, and maintenance across a variety of cloud and on premises systems as well as implementation of IT solutions to complex business problems. You will be expected to provide expert level technical and project leadership and may manage and be a key contributor on multiple projects simultaneously.  

Additionally, the Senior Systems Engineer will: 

Plan and conduct comprehensive infrastructure engineering duties. Role may focus on one or more technical area. Perform expert level build, configuration, and maintenance across systems. Implement IT solutions to complex business problems. Provide expert level technical and project leadership. May manage and be a key contributor on multiple projects simultaneously.

Job Specific Duties: 

• Design, implement, and document complex infrastructure solutions in a sustainable, supported, cost effective and reliable approach across different technologies.
• Perform advanced troubleshooting, administration, automation, monitoring, and alerting across all applications and infrastructure in our portfolio including, but not limited to, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Mailman, and a variety of ancillary systems hosted both on prem and in the Amazon Web Services and Azure cloud platforms. This may also include liaising with external vendors as required.
• Enhance our service offerings’ efficiency, accuracy, and effectiveness by utilizing extensive scripting and automation within on-premises and cloud technologies.
• Work with internal team members across various technical groups to ensure alignment and coordination.
• This is an excellent opportunity for a technologist who is interested in automation and integration with identity and other systems via scripts and API interfaces.
• Occasionally required to work outside of normal business hours
• Required to participate in regular 24/7 on-call rotation

Basic Qualifications

• Minimum of seven years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

The following Additional Qualifications are strongly preferred. If you meet some, but not all, you are still encouraged to apply; we value employees with a willingness to learn.

•    Expert-level experience with Google Workspace
•    Experience with Google Apps Manager (GAM) is highly desirable
•    Knowledge of cloud technologies, specifically Amazon Web Services and Azure
•    Experience with Unix and Unix Scripting
•    Demonstrated team performance skills, service mindset approach, and the ability to act as a trusted advisor 

Certificates and Licenses

• Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred

Working Conditions

Interview and onboarding activity for this position may be conducted via telephone & Zoom video conferencing, based on the department’s current presence on campus.

This position will be based in Cambridge, MA.  HUIT actively supports hybrid work where business and team needs allow. Additional detail will be discussed during the interview process.  All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA, CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, and VT).
