Job Summary
 

The Senior Windows Systems Administrator is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing technologies for the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business (Chicago Booth). The environments include Microsoft Windows, VMWare and Linux. The Senior Systems Administrator keeps abreast of technology trends and information, recommends appropriate hardware and software upgrades, and serves as a systems expert and advisor. In addition, this individual acts as a mentor for other team members and provides training as appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Introduces and integrates new technologies into the existing Data Center environments. Implements strategy for the environment including the following: Windows, VMWare,Veeam backup solution, Splunk, Puppet, EMC Isilon/Unity storage, F5 load balancers and CISCO firewalls and switches.
  • Leads special projects requiring thoughtful analysis and strategic thinking.
  • Serves as an expert and advisor to faculty, students, and staff on Booth-supported technology.
  • Automates systems to streamline server operations.
  • Analyzes alternatives, develops business cases, and presents recommendations for technology to Booth IT leadership.
  • Promotes teamwork and collaboration within the Operations team and across Booth IT department.
  • Acts as a role model and mentor for other Booth IT staff.
  • Resolves open issues within the service level agreements related to servers and networks.
  • Answers technical inquiries and assists users within established service level agreements.
  • Analyzes system logs and identifies potential issues.
  • Troubleshoots any reported problems.
  • Monitors and tunes system performance.
  • Performs routine audits of systems and software.
  • Installs and configures new hardware and software.
  • Applies operating system updates, patches, and configuration changes.
  • Creates, updates, or deletes user accounts.
  • Performs backups.
  • Documents technical environment and system configuration.
  • Solves complex problems to configure, install, upgrade, and maintain server applications and hardware. Works to safeguard the integrity of computer software. Implements operating system enhancements to improve the reliability and performance of the system.
  • Tracks compliance and maintains documentation for hardware, software, and service inventories for management reports.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.


Certifications:

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field.

Experience:

  • A minimum four years of systems administration experience.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Expert level knowledge in Windows, VMware and Veeam.
  • Advance level of knowledge in the following  technologies: Splunk, Puppet, F5 load balancers, EMC Isilon/Unity storage.
  • Experience managing networked servers with knowledge of switches and firewalls, network services, system utilities, hardware installation, and operating/application system installation.
  • Experience in a multi-platform network environment, client support, backup and restore technologies.
  • Expertise with system administration issues in a large and complex client server environment.
  • Knowledge of backup technology, and monitoring and other automated systems management technologies.

  • Outstanding deductive and investigative skills to identify and diagnose complex, non-intuitive technical problems.

Working Conditions

  • This position is currently expected to work a minimum three days per week in the office.
