Introduction

The SUTD Fab Lab is a place for makers to create, to learn, to invent, to play – a place for learning and innovation. The Fab Lab provides access to a one-stop-shop which contains tools, machines, materials, and training to allow students to make (almost) anything, thus promoting the new face of engineering, technology & design. It imparts STEM knowledge application and encourages tinkering, hand-on & design thinking to its users.

Job Purpose                                                                                                              

Work directly with SUTD users and operate equipment to support the fabrication of objects and parts.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Provide technical instructions and hands-on guidance to students on the use of fabrication tools and machines in coordination with course requirements and learning outcomes as determined by the faculty.
  • Develop, update, and disseminate policies governing hands-on experience, lab safety training, and digital instructional learning related to fabrication and prototyping. This includes keeping up to date with EHS standards for workspace, equipment, and materials and their timely communications to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Mentor students on their projects and help them with innovative ideas in fabrication techniques.
  • Design and facilitate hands-on activities for STEM outreach activities and workshops, and to contract and supervise external partners/suppliers, when necessary.
  • Provide technical and administrative support in handling related aspects of procurement, setting-up, operation, maintenance & implementation of equipment.
  • Develop digital fabrication workflows for purchasing, maintaining, and repairing equipment, purchasing, and storing of materials, waste management, budget management, usage reports, logistics and scheduling of projects.
  • Manage and update supplies and inventory of all tools and materials and submit replacement requests as needed.
  • Serve as a champion for the Fab Lab, promote the opportunities available through various venues in the area, and maintain partnerships with external organizations.
  • Spearhead the digital transformation of Fab Lab, such as lead and contribute to projects in industrial 4.0 automation, VR/MR metaverse, and digital twins for support sustainability and prototyping.
  • May work on some evenings or weekends or shift work.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Diploma/Bachelor of Engineering.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in some, if not all, of the following areas: wood working, machinery, metal fabrication, digital and analogue techniques, digital fabrication and rapid prototyping and CNC equipment and technology (laser cutter, CNC router, robotic arm, etc), material handling and EHS safety standards.
