***1 Year Term Position***

POSITION CONTEXT

As part of the Information security team, the Senior Software Developer is involved in the full Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) process of McGill University IT applications portfolio. Working closely with other IT teams, delivers in a timely manner and with high quality level expected by McGill users. The Senior Software Developer designs, develops, debugs, tests, supports/maintains, integrates applications and IT systems. Using own experience and expertise, identifies, defines, and promotes development standards, technologies, and best practices. Coach other less experienced Developers.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Support IT team in resolving system incidents/problems
  • Provide in-depth expertise in the discipline of technical design, programming, testing and deployment, and coach developers in applying related processes, procedures, and best practices
  • Work with and support other IT Professionals in:
    • evaluating business requests for the evolution of the systems within his/her own domain
    • designing and implementing new systems or enhancements to existing systems that meet business requirements and are aligned with IT orientations
    • evaluating technical feasibility, identifying tasks and artifacts required and providing estimates
    • Analyzing impact and providing technical expertise for integration with existing systems
  • Participate in the development of the detailed technical design
  • Transform detailed functional specifications into code/scripts in accordance with design and programming standards
  • Develop and document the following artifacts (not limited to): code, scripts (database and others), automated unit/functional/integration tests, unit test cases, deployment instructions
  • Conduct unit testing and support Analysts and Technical teams during functional and integration testing
  • Propose, define and promote development standards and other initiatives related to continuous improvement 
  • Assist Technical teams during deployment
  • Perform peer code review and coach less experienced developers
  • Develop and maintain extensive knowledge of software development technologies and best practices

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Education:  Undergraduate Degree (related field)

Experience:  Five (5) years’ related experience

OTHER QUALIFYING SKILLS AND/OR ABILITIES

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles, concepts and theories of own discipline and some knowledge of principles, and concepts in other functions
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles, concepts, and theories in application development relative to business systems software, web applications
  • Understands appropriate procedures, policies, practices, systems and regulations
  • Experience and in-depth expertise of object oriented and structured programming concepts, and knowledge of design patterns
  • Experience and in-depth expertise with web development (one or many of the following): JavaScript, JQuery, CSS, AJAX, HTML5 and web standards in general (W3C)
  • Experience with one of many of the following technologies/concepts is an asset: Azure data factory, data lakes, ETL, SSIS
  • Knowledge of modeling languages such as UML
  • Knowledge of Web Services (SOAP, REST) and API design patterns
  • Experience and in-depth expertise with PowerBI and Oracle databases, MsSQL
  • Knowledge of Linux/Unix
  • Experience with Version Control Systems (GIT an asset)
  • Knowledge of Software Delivery Life Cycle approaches (Agile, ITIL are assets) and methodologies (Macroscope Productivity Center an asset). Secure development practices an asset.
  • Good troubleshooting skills and ability to take initiatives.
  • Attention to detail, diligent and rigorous work methods
  • Self-motivated, fast learner and demonstrated ability to work on different projects concurrently and to establish priorities
  • Good team player with strong focus on delivering results to meet the business needs
  • Ability to coach and advise
  • Knowledge of the higher education sector (an asset)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills – English (spoken and written) – French (spoken)

Annual Salary:

(MPEX Grade 08) $92,020.00 – $115,020.00 – $138,020.00
