Then come join us at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences as a Senior Scientist.Your personal sphere of play:Your future workplace is situated at the Faculty of Life Sciences at the Universitätszentrum Althanstraße (UZA II), where research groups work in the pharmaceutical sciences, nutritional sciences and biology. The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences is internationally recognized for its outstanding pharmaceutical and disease-relevant research as well as education. We aim to identify and characterize new biologically active natural products and synthetic drugs, understand their interactions with human targets on a molecular level using in silico, in vitro, and in vivo models, and discover new disease-relevant targets for drug discovery. Research at The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences covers a wide range of pathologies, e.g. cancer, aging, neurosciences, and chronic pain.The position holder will be the head of one of the animal facilities at the Universitätszentrum Althanstraße (UZA II) and will be directly responsible for managing the facility. Candidates need expert knowledge in (i) preclinical research on mice (i.e. designing, planning and conducting experiments with pre-clinical disease models in mice), and (ii) rodent handling and welfare. Given the importance of animal welfare, candidates having expertise on acute and chronic pain with several years of documented research experience will be given preference.Your future tasks:Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • Management and lead of one of the animal facility at the Universitätszentrum Althanstraße (UZA II).
  • Leadership of the personel of the animal facility.
  • Ensuring compliance with hygiene and animal welfare guidelines.
  • Ensuring the availability of required consumables and funktionality of equipment.
  • Identifying new requirements in animal husbandry, including equipment, procedures, animal handling.
  • Interaction with all users of the animal facility, i.e. counselling on:
  • animal husbandry, handling and rodent colony management,
  • animal experiments (designs, statistics, and implementation),
  • animal welfare (in particular in the case of disease-models),
  • applications for animal experimental licenses, and
  • writing research projects and manuscripts for preclinical and translational research.
  • Teaching of new facility users and students.
  • Close collabiration with the head of the other animal facility at UZA II and the animal facility at UBB
  • (University of Vienna Biology Building).

Education and training

  • Completed doctoral/PhD studies in medicine, biology, pharmacy or related fields.
  • High competence and several years of documented experience in preclinical research. Candidates with a strong background in acute and chronic pain research in rodents will be given preference.
  • Proven experience and track record in designing, planning, and conducting experiments with preclinical disease models in mice.
  • Proven Experience in research management.
  • Didactic skills and experience in coordinating Bachelor and Master students.
  • IT skills, especially statistical software (e.g. R, Python) and proven experience with animal facility software (e.g. Pyrat).
  • Fluent in English (in speech and writing). German language skills are desirable, but not a must for this position.
