Welcome to our team!RequirementsSpecific RequirementsYour personal sphere of play:The position is based at the Institute for South Asian, Tibetan and Buddhist Studies (ISTB) and you will be responsible for supporting the infrastructural and conceptual development and coordination of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research and Documentary of Inner and South Asian Cultural History (CIRDIS) and its collections, as well as the integration of Tibetan text collections in particular into digital platforms. You work closely with the director of CIRDIS and the (Western) Himalaya Archive Vienna and teach independently at the ISTB.The position is initially limited to 1 year, with the option of permanent employment.Your future tasks:You will be actively involved in research, teaching and administration, which means

  • Infrastructural and conceptual development of CIRDIS
  • Independent management of research projects/initiatives
  • Application for or support in applying for research projects relating to the Himalayan region (acquisition of third-party funding)
  • Data management (organisation, maintenance and editorial work) of the textual and multimedia sources from Inner and South Asia collected at ISTB and CIRDIS
  • In cooperation with the director of CIRDIS, you will coordinate the activities and support the conception of the centre
  • International publication and lecture activities
  • Co-operation with the director of the (Western) Himalaya Archive Vienna
  • Involvement in the activities of the “Eurasian Transformations” cluster
  • Teaching within the framework of the collective agreement provisions in the BA “Languages and Cultures of South Asia and Tibet” and the MA programmes of the ISTB (independent teaching of courses on Inner and South Asia)
  • Active participation in the teaching administration, i.e. taking over functions such as the vice teaching coordinator of the ISTB

This is part of your personality:

  • Completed doctorate in the field of South Asian Studies, Tibetan Studies or a related subject with a focus on philological and cultural studies
  • Advanced academic qualification: several years of post-doctoral research experience, international publication and lecture activities
  • Research focus should be on the Himalayan region, with a focus on historical developments; also with regard to the cultural heritage of South and Central Asia in relation to modernity and the region
  • Experience in dealing with primarily Tibetan manuscripts and prints and their digital processing
  • Very good knowledge of literary Tibetan and spoken Tibetan or one of the dialects or local languages of the Himalayan region
  • Knowledge of another language of Inner or South Asia, such as Nepali is an advantage
  • User knowledge in the field of data management or data maintenance
  • Methodological focus on one or more of the following disciplines: Digital humanities, history, philology, art history, social and cultural anthropology, religious studies
  • Experience in applying for and managing research projects
  • Teaching experience and experience in teaching administration
  • Ability to work in a team

Also expected:

  • IT skills: very good knowledge of word processing and presentation programmes
  • basic knowledge of content management systems for website maintenance
  • data administration and data maintenance
  • Very good knowledge of German (including administrative tasks)
  • Very good knowledge of English
