Senior Researcher in Numerical and Experimental Coastal Engineering

At DTU Civil and Mechanical Engineering , section of Fluid Mechanics, Coastal and Maritime Engineering, we are looking for a Senior researcher in the field of coastal and offshore engineering. 

The coastal and offshore regions are under significant development. This includes development of marine infrastructure, i.e., energy islands, aquaculture and urban developments. Further, our shores are under influence of climate changes that affects for instance the cross-shore morphological development. In many of these areas there is a need for increased knowledge on wave and current interaction with sea-beds, shore and around structures. This is for instance cross-shore sediment processes and scour processes around foundations for wind turbines, cables, and pipelines. Another important topic is the spreading mechanisms in the marine environment, such as sediment transport, micro plastic and pollutants from fish cages, dredging operations and nourishment of beaches. 

Responsibilities and qualifications

Responsibilities 

• Develop and extend models for sediment and scour processes in the coastal zone
• Develop and extend models for spreading mechanisms in the marine environment
• Combine numerical and experimental research within the areas above.
• Supervise PhD and MSc students working on coastal and offshore related projects
• Maintain collaboration with other DTU departments, external academic partners, and industrial partners
• Establish new collaboration projects to benefit students and research activities
• Secure funding for R & D projects from national and international sources
• Manage and report on research projects to external partners and funding providers
• Publish in high-quality journals and coach junior researchers and PhD students to do the same

Qualifications 

• Solid Experience in CFD software (Preferable OpenFOAM).
• Solid understanding of the hydrodynamic conditions in the coastal zone including turbulence modelling in breaking and broken waves.
• Solid understanding of scour processes around structures in the coastal zone.
• Experience in experimental research in the coastal zone.
• Ability to teach and supervise students.

You must contribute to teaching at the Department. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both. 

As a formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as a researcher or postdoc. To be appointed as a senior researcher, you must have completed a didactic/pedagogic education. If you do not have the necessary education, then it is possible to complete this requirement within a period of two years of appointment.
