We are seeking an exceptional Senior Research Fellow with a strong and growing track record as a researcher to lead an exciting new research project to better understand and embed virtual models of care in Australia.

THE ROLE

  • Salary Package: Senior Research Fellow (Level C) base salary from $134,645 to $154,843, plus 17% employer’s superannuation and annual leave loading. Pro-rata rates apply for part-time appointments

  • Appointment type: Full-time, fixed-term position for 5 years (0.8 FTE appointments may be considered), commencing 1 February 2023

  • Macquarie University (North Ryde) location (The Australian Institute of Health Innovation is wheelchair accessible)

Virtual models of care (i.e. consultation by telephone, video-conferencing and remote-monitoring of health conditions supported by digital patient information and wearable devices) can improve access to services, patient experience, efficiency and health outcomes whilst reducing costs of care compared to face-to-face care. Integration of virtual models with face-to-face care across the Australian health system is identified as a national priority to create and sustain a healthy nation in the context of longer life, chronic and complex conditions, and Australia’s vast geographic population distribution.

We are seeking an exceptional Senior Research Fellow with a strong and growing track record as a researcher to lead an exciting new research project to better understand and embed virtual models of care in Australia. The project involves close collaboration with a range of health system and service partners. Work will be carried out onsite at Macquarie University (MQ), and across health districts in New South Wales and Victoria. As Lead and Project Manager, a central aspect of the role with be having oversight of research activities and supporting team members across the study sites.

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Develop and execute study protocols for quantitative and qualitative studies to evaluate virtual models of care

  • Undertake the project management of simultaneous studies and wider program of work

  • Provide support and advice with regard research methods and project processes to the wider project team

  • Lead the conduct of literature reviews, prepare and support colleagues to develop research manuscripts, presentations and reports 

  • Engage with project partners and stakeholders including consumers and manage stakeholder relationships effectively

About You

As a senior researcher with a highly regarded profile, you will lead the Smarter Hospitals Project research team and manage the Project on a day-to-day basis. You will bring your excellent project management, communication, and interpersonal skills to work closely with our stakeholders, including healthcare policy makers, healthcare executives, clinicians, and consumers, to ensure that Project aims are met. You will model behaviours that align with the Macquarie University vision and values and foster these in your team, with research students and the broader community to create an inclusive and high-performance culture. 

About Us

The Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences is ambitiously pushing the boundaries of progressive thinking and challenging what’s possible to solve some of the big issues of our time, both nationally and on a global scale. The Faculty forms part of MQ Health, an integrated academic health sciences enterprise which incorporates Macquarie University Hospital and primary and speciality clinics. We have active research programs in neurosciences (especially motor neuron disease, neurological rehabilitation and the clinical neuroscience of pain), cancer medicine, and vascular science, amongst others. Our Faculty hosts the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI), an internationally acclaimed powerhouse researching health systems, e-health and patient safety. 

The Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research, one of the core research centres within AIHI, has a multi-stream program of research which focuses on investigating the outcomes and safety of health services. The Centre has particular expertise in assessing the impact of information technologies and investigating the role of electronic health records and decision support in supporting improved health care delivery and health outcomes. The Centre’s research team is multi-disciplinary and applies a broad range of research techniques, from RCT designs to direct observations of clinical work. The position is in the Healthcare Engagement and Workplace Behaviour Stream,

led by Associate Professor Reema Harrison located in the Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research (CHSSR) at AIHI.

Essential criteria:

  • A PhD in a relevant discipline

  • Exceptional ability to coordinate the research activities of a research team

  • Proven ability to work with a range of stakeholders across healthcare including policy makers, healthcare executives, clinicians, and consumers

  • Demonstrated strong track record of contributing peer reviewed publications in high quality journals

  • Leadership skills and extensive experience in research supervision

  • Experience and interest in interdisciplinary and multi-method research

  • Experience with different quantitative research designs and data analysis for health research

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to prepare and publish in high impact quality journals

Desirable criteria:

  • High-level leadership experience managing large-scale projects

  • Experience working with healthcare consumers

  • Experience in writing research proposals and securing research grants

  • A demonstrated commitment to promoting and advancing the principles of equity, inclusion and diversity will be highly regarded
