We wish to appoint a talented researcher to undertake research in the field of ethnographic study for Industry 5.0, part of the collaborative project “UP-SKILLING FOR INDUSTRY 5.0 ROLL-OUT (Up-Skill)” with multiple industrial and academic partners funded by Horizon Europe. This is a 24-month full-time appointment.

The Up-Skill project aims not only to identify the key features of the topology that defines human-machine relations in industry 5.0 but will define the managerial competencies needed to succeed in this space. The project will link varied firm strategic contexts, technology implementation and detailed workplace ethnographies in a single research project. It addresses primarily the workforce implications of industry 5.0 and in particular the relationship between automation choices and maintenance of skilled work.

Lancaster University as one partner of the entire project, will focus on Supporting ethnographic study with researchers based at end user organisations. Also Lancaster University will develop and apply artificial intelligence and machine learning across the use cases. Your required tasks include: 

  • Development of case studies within supply chain settings, reviewing ‘hand built’ product with respect to opportunities for data-driven improvements in yield/ultimate performance.
  • Support ethnographic study with researchers based at end user organisations.
  • Participation in Up-Skill project meetings; preparation and presentation of talks, posters and reports to disseminate the results of these studies.
  • Preparation of progress reports for Up-Skill describing the results of the project.
  • Participation in national and international conferences and workshops to present the results of the project to a wider audience and to learn about current advances in the field.
  • Preparation of journal papers for publication of project findings.
  • Participation in (and ultimately taking the lead in) writing new research proposals that build on the expertise developed in this project.

    The School of Engineering at Lancaster University has excellent research laboratories and associated research facilities. To support the experimental results and modelling requirements of this technology development project, the department also has available a comprehensive range of software tools, in addition to central computing services support. 

    You must hold a MSc or PhD in a relevant discipline, and related academic or industrial experience at post-doctoral or commensurate level is highly desirable; excellent team-working and communication skills are also required. 

    The position is available to engineers / data scientists with experience of implementing data analytics in a manufacturing environment.

    This is a full-time post.

    You will join us on an indefinite contract however, the role remains contingent on external funding which, at this time until 31/08/2025.
