Reporting to the Director of the Enterprise Project Management Office (EPMO) and with a secondary reporting relationship to the Director of Student Information Systems (SIS) within the Administrative Technology Services (ATS) division of HUIT, the Senior Project Manager (“Sr. PM”) serves as an advisor, consultant, and project manager for the information technology needs in Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, with a focus on projects approved by the FAS Project Review Board (PRB).
Within this context, the PM is responsible for designing, planning, implementing, managing, and measuring / tracking success for one or more complex projects often involving multiple information technologies that serve to enable a variety of business strategies and goals, which can span across the entire University or major portions of it. The strategies and implementations of each project will adhere to University-wide standards and processes. As such, the PM is responsible for supporting the development and ongoing refreshment of portfolio, program, and project management approaches, processes, tools, and templates that serve as the University-wide standard, and integrate well with other related University-wide governance processes (e.g., budgeting and financial management).
Responsible for designing, planning, implementing, managing, and measuring / tracking success for one or more strategic, complex projects often involving multiple information technologies that serve to enable a variety of business strategies and goals, which can span across the entire University or major portions of it. The strategies and implementations of each project will adhere to University-wide standards and processes, including assisting team with adoption and execution of agile processes.

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of seven years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

  • Experience in developing and implementing practical options for and solving complex business challenges through IT enablement in a highly disciplined and collaborative manner across multiple stakeholders (i.e., clients and “customers”). 
  • Exceptionally well organized, action oriented, an excellent listener, and thoughtful communicator with a record of demonstrated success communicating effectively across all levels of an organization from entry level staff to University executives and in both technical and nontechnical, business languages. 
  • Problem solving skills, including specifically: the ability to develop and analyze options / hypotheses objectively, develop comprehensive and mutually exclusive criteria / hypotheses to support strategic decision making, apply industry leading prioritization methods, and facilitate negotiations / discussions involving groups of large diverse stakeholders; 
  • Communication skills (both written and verbal), including specifically: the ability to succinctly articulate business impacts, translate technical information into layperson and business terms, concisely ‘storyboard’ complex problems, solutions, and approaches in a manner appropriate for senior business executives, develop strategic frameworks, templates, and high quality pragmatic deliverables that can be carried forth and executed by project teams, and articulate and demonstrate the project value to the University community in business terms; 
  • Leadership skills, including specifically: the ability to lead internal change effectively and sensitively, attract and retain talent, build rapport across teammates and clients / customers, develop / mentor /motivate others, demonstrate and foster genuine and meaningful collaboration, share knowledge effectively, respect others, and live the global values of the University’s new IT organization. 
  • Experience with storage systems and technology or video is a plus. 
  • Knowledge of Harvard University community and technology is a plus. 
  • PMP, Scrum Master Certification, and/or Product Owner certification is a plus 

Certificates and Licenses

  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy Project Management Foundations course (or external equivalent) preferred
  • PMP or other relevant certification and experience preferred, e.g., Scrum Master

Working Conditions

Interview and onboarding activity for this position may be conducted via telephone & Zoom video conferencing, based on the department’s current presence on campus.
