Position is full-time and contingent on continued receipt of funding. Position is funded through 8/31/2023 and continued funding is anticipated.

Purpose

Provide day-to-day leadership on Center for Health Communication (CHC) programs and projects that support our external partners in creating and implementing evidence-based health communication.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the daily project manager for the Be Well Communities outreach support project, including serving as main point of contact for MD Anderson partners. Be Well Communities is MD Anderson’s place-based strategy for comprehensive cancer prevention and control, working with communities to promote wellness and stop cancer before it starts.

  • Work closely with other CHC staff performing duties related to the project, including daily collaboration with a graphic designer on materials creation and weekly collaboration with program assistant on social media tracking activities.

  • Meet regularly with internal and external teams and track timelines and deliverables closely to ensure project deliverables are progressing in an efficient manner; provide quarterly reports to partners that track progress toward contract objectives.

  • Utilize public health program planning principles to help the Be Well Communities team plan, implement, and evaluate health communication strategies of varying size and scope; apply a health equity lens to all methods, strategies, and tactics.

  • Collaborate with institutional subject matter experts to write evidence-based, effective, and creative health communication messages for cancer prevention strategies. Serve as lead writer for materials created as part of the Be Well Communities project, including writing social media content, copywriting for campaigns intended to change health behaviors, media talking points, and key messages.

  • Maintain functional partnerships with Be Well Communities partners in the Houston area; occasional travel to Houston area may be required. Work with partners to distribute content across multiple channels, including web, social media, email newsletters, feature stories, digital displays, environmental signage, and giveaway items.

  • Support CHC’s mission to lead the creation of evidence-based health communication scholarship, education, and practice. Related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, communication, advertising, public relations or related field

  • Five or more years’ experience with project management and leadership

  • One or more years supervisory experience

  • Strong written communication skills, including ability to write according to style guides as well as creative and persuasive writing

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously with a variety of internal and external stakeholders

  • Prior experience conducting media monitoring or managing other media evaluation activities

  • Demonstrated ability to get up to speed on a project quickly

  • Previous work with designers or professionals creating visual communication materials

  • Interest in health communication, public health, and the mission of the Center for Health Communication

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in public health, communication, advertising, public relations, or related field

  • Six or more years’ experience with project management and leadership

  • Two or more years supervisory experience

  • Prior experience managing communication campaigns or projects, including earned media strategies

  • Prior creative copywriting experience for public health campaigns or projects

  • Prior experience writing reports, talking points, or social media content 

  • Prior experience working in relevant health topics, including chronic disease and cancer prevention, physical activity promotion, healthy eating promotion, and sun safety

  • Experience maintaining partnerships with governmental, non-governmental, or community organizations

Salary Range

$58,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

Lift and move standard office files and supplies. Work hours may include occasional evenings, weekends and some holidays during peak periods to meet deadlines. Position is a hybrid of in-person work on UT’s campus and virtual / remote work.
