Senior Plumber (Facilities Services Trades Specialist 4 – MR 08)

The Senior Plumber installs, maintains, repairs plumbing/piping systems for cold/hot/chilled water, steam, sewage, drainage, air, and gas; installs, maintains, repairs restroom facilities and other plumbing fixtures; and provides guidance to lower grade craftsmen in maintaining these systems.

Job functions and responsibilities:

  • Performs emergency repairs initiated by trouble calls from campus
  • Responds with prompt action to emergency situations- critical to minimize property damage and/or hazardous conditions to the campus community
  • Estimates the amount of materials required for major repairs projects in plumbing area
  • Determines routing of piping and location of fixtures in such projects
  • Provides technical guidance to lower grade personnel in performing these tasks
  • Performs routine maintenance projects scheduled on a weekly basis
  • Performs installation of new plumbing and piping systems, appliances, and fixtures
  • Performs drain snaking and water jetting of drain lines
  • Assists in repairs of hot and chilled water lines in manholes and in buildings
  • Perform preventive maintenance, including testing and repairing backflow preventers, following predetermined schedules and instructions
  • Assists other craftsmen in performing various duties

The Senior Plumber performs repetitive plumbing and piping installation, maintenance, and repair work. These activities include digging and carrying heavy, cumbersome objects. Must be capable of working from ladders and in low or confined spaces. The use of screw drivers, drills, pliers, pipe wrenches, shovel, pick, and mattock are required in this position. The proper use of chemical compounds is required. 

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Backflow Prevention Certification
  • Welding Certification
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local plumbing codes
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment

Minimum Qualifications: Typically requires a high school diploma and four years of experience in pipe welding and plumbing, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must have knowledge of federal, state, and local plumbing codes.

Preferred Qualifications: Backflow Prevention Certification, Welding Certification, and 5+ years’ experience in plumbing are preferred.
