Job Summary Are you looking for an opportunity to not just design, build and operate networks, but to build solutions to help educate students and support the Common Good ? Bowdoin College was founded and endowed in the belief that there is something bigger than ourselves and strives to support all students with programs such as need blind admissions and the recently launched Digital Excellence Commitment (DExC) .
Bowdoin is looking for someone to design and build our next generation network connecting our Brunswick, Maine campus , the Schiller Coastal Studies Center , and data centers to the Internet and cloud. Working with a small networking team you will create, install, and operate the next 10-year network supporting the college’s academics, research, and operations. You will have the opportunity to influence how students interact and connect to the Internet, how research is completed on high performance computing clusters in the data center, and how faculty digitally interact with students, all while maintaining high levels of security, operability, and scalability.

Education/Skills Requirements Required:

  • 6+ years of experience with enterprise network architecture, including designing, building, and maintaining enterprise IT systems
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education/experience required.

Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents Required:

  • Experience operating scalable, redundant, fault tolerant and secure networks in the access, core, border, and data center layers
  • Experience with enterprise cloud systems
  • Desire to work with a small team
  • Drive to work in a rapidly evolving environment
  • The motivation to learn and constantly improve processes and tools
  • A love for solving problems

Preferred:

  • Experience with HPC Cluster networking, and specialized research and academic networks (science instruments, IoT devices, custom purpose physical and virtual systems)
  • Experience supporting residential dorm network environments with consumer level devices such as gamin consoles, smart TVs, printers, etc.
  • Experience in automation tools
  • Knowledge of Zero Trust principles and implementations
  • Network certifications
Standard Work Days and Hours Fully remote, with occasional trips to campus as needed for qualified candidates (Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, Virginia, New Hampshire and New York). This position is expected to work normal business hours, however there will be times when after-hours work may be required for maintenance or problem resolution.
