YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

WHAT YOU’LL DO

This is a joint clinical and academic post designed to provide both clinical and research training, which would be suitable for middle grade doctors (St4 and above or equivalent), including trainees considering or currently undertaking Neonatal Grid subspecialty training and also those with a CCT who wish to gain additional research and clinical experience. The post would also be suitable for those wishing to develop an academic career, undertaking research and working towards a higher degree (in this case in the field of neonatal nutrition)

The post is designed to complement and strengthen research in neonatal nutrition. There is already an established programme of neonatal nutrition research in Southampton, which currently focusses on better understanding the patterns of growth in preterm infants, and the optimal nutrition required to achieve them

  • Forty percent of your daytime activities – an average of 20 hours per week – will be spent on research and training in neonatal nutrition.
    • You’ll help recruit to existing studies on the neonatal unit
    • You’ll have the chance to work with existing nutrition and outcome datasets be encouraged to develop your own project, that could form the basis of a higher degree if wished.
    • You’ll be supported with training and mentorship in research
    • You’ll be encouraged to attend weekly multidisciplinary nutrition ward rounds and academic meetings
  • Sixty percent of your time – an average of around 28 hours per week – will be dedicated to providing middle grade clinical service for the regional level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Princess Anne Hospital, University Hospital Southampton.
    • This will include Neonatal ICU ward work and procedures, Supporting the regional transport service, Special care cover and Neonatal follow up clinics
    • You will be encouraged to take part in the wide range of educational and training opportunities within the department that is a recognised centre in the National Grid for Higher Specialist Training in Neonatology. While these posts are not recognised formally as training posts by the Wessex Deanery it is anticipated that the educational opportunities available will match those of our recognised training posts.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

You’ll need to have:

  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • 12 months tertiary neonatal experience, plus other relevant paediatric experience
  • Good communication skills

Previous experience in research is not essential, though a genuine interest and enthusiasm for research is.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.

Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)

Basic Salary –  MT04        £51,017       Basic Salary – MT05       £58,398     

Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5;

  • Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training
  • Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g FRCP, FRCA, FRCS)
  • A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee)

Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview

Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.  Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.  Applicants requiring Tier 2 sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.
