Senior Machine Learning Research Scientist

The SEI’s Tactical and AI-Enabled Systems (TAS) initiative researches state-of-the-art technologies and builds advanced prototypes using these technologies to support small units operating in difficult environments that are often disconnected from enterprise computing infrastructure. In addition, TAS researches and develops software engineering principles and practices for development, deployment, and sustainment of AI/ML systems.

We are seeking a Senior Machine Learning Researcher to conduct applied research in the field of software engineering for AI/ML systems, work with researchers and software engineers to mature and prototype technologies, and transition technologies to DoD, government, and industry organizations. This is an excellent opportunity to work with leading researchers and faculty at a truly world-class institution. You will co-author papers and research proposals, execute studies, and present findings to DoD sponsors and at academic conferences.
The ideal candidate will enjoy working with world-renowned researchers/engineers at the SEI, Carnegie Mellon University, and other universities and R&D centers.

Requirements:
•    MS or higher in computer science, machine learning, statistics, or related discipline with eight (8) years of experience or equivalent combination of training or experience; OR PhD in computer science or related discipline with five (5) years of experience or equivalent combination of training or experience; PhD strongly preferred.
•    Two or more (2+) years of experience in system/software architecture and development for machine learning or data analytics.
•    Willingness to travel to various locations to support the SEI’s overall mission. This includes within the SEI and CMU community, sponsor sites, conferences, and offsite meetings on occasion.
•    You will be subject to a background check and must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
•    Expertise developing and presenting research proposals
•    Expertise implementing and applying machine learning techniques to different data sets
•    Deep knowledge of at least one deep learning framework (e.g., TensorFlow, Caffe)
•    Deep knowledge of at least one mathematical/statistical

programming package (e.g., python numpy/scipy/pandas, R, MATLAB)
•    Excellent analytical, problem solving and interpersonal skills
•    Ability to work in small teams with a variety of technical and organizational skills
•    Superb communication skills (oral and written)
Desired Experience:
•    Experience with specific methods listed above and/or evidence that you can learn
•    Experience deploying systems that contain AI/ML components into production environments (i.e., getting AI/ML models out of the lab and into real systems) is a plus
