At Hertfordshire Law School we pride ourselves on delivering a truly innovative learning and teaching experience coupled with practice-led, hands-on experience. As part of our commitment to experiential legal education, students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in our award winning Hertfordshire Law Clinic. The Clinic is based in our £10m purpose-built Law Court Building on the University of Hertfordshire’s de Havilland campus, which includes a full-scale replica Crown Court Room, and state-of-the-art teaching facilities.
We are seeking to appoint an experienced practising solicitor/barrister to supervise students in one or more clinical areas and to lead and contribute to the design and delivery of practice-based modules on our law programmes.
Main duties and responsibilities:
The successful candidate will recruit, train and supervise student volunteers for Hertfordshire Law Clinic and other pro bono projects, and provide legal advice in the shadowing Law Clinic. You will also be expected to develop and teach on modules including the Clinical Legal Education module, and you will potentially lead a module yourself. As part of our research strategy, you will contribute to the development of our growing research community, including working collaboratively to secure external funding opportunities.
To support the expansion of the Law Clinic and enhance the Law School’s reputation you will also build relationships with a wide range of regional charities, community groups and employers, and support recruitment to the Law School by attending open days and outreach events.
Skills and experience required:
You will be a practising solicitor or barrister (of England and Wales) with substantial proven PQE and proven experience of advising and supervising others in one or more of the following areas of law:
Landlord and Tenant Law
Welfare Benefits
Education Law
Immigration Law
Family Law
Employment Law
Intellectual Property and Company Law
Teaching experience on an undergraduate or postgraduate law programme, or equivalent professional experience supervising trainee solicitors, pupils or paralegals is essential. It would be advantageous to have experience of developing and teaching Clinical Legal Education modules and experience of supervising students in a university law clinic.
You will be a self-starter with excellent self-management and organisational skills, excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to place teaching and learning into the broader professional/commercial context. You will have a highly developed sense of professionalism and a commitment to access to justice and providing the highest standards of client care. You will also have a commitment to ensuring to equal opportunities and to ensuring that students from all backgrounds have the support they need to succeed in their studies and progress in their careers.
You will be committed to the ongoing development of teaching and learning skills and can use technology to enhance the quality and flexibility of delivery to students. The ability to network and form good working relationships and an enthusiastic approach towards your work are essential
It would also be desirable for candidates to have the ability to contribute to the ongoing development of the School’s growing research community, carry out research to Research Excellence Framework (REF) standard and secure external funding opportunities.
Qualifications required
You will have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification, alongside a Master’s qualification in Law or equivalent professional qualification. You will also be a practising Solicitor or Barrister (of England and Wales)
A teaching qualification and / or Fellowship of Advance HE is desirable.
