Kōrero mō te tūranga – About the role
In accordance with these values, Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor to join the Environmental Science team in the School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences (SGEES). We are looking for someone who is an excellent team member, and whose teaching and research interests both complement and extend those of the existing team.

Ō pūmanawa – About you
You will have a strong understanding of the state of Aotearoa-New Zealand’s environment and its importance to Māori communities today and in the future. You will be knowledgeable about how environmental science data is collected, analysed, and funnelled into policy decisions. You should hold a PhD in environmental science or a closely related discipline and have a well-established research profile in these or related disciplines. You will be able to co-ordinate and develop undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Environmental Science that contribute to our programmes in Environmental Science, Geography, Earth Science, and Climate Change; draw upon your own expertise or networks to embed mātauranga into these programmes where relevant; supervise postgraduate students; and pursue a dynamic programme of research.

The Environmental Science team operates in an exciting and growing space at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington; the team likes sharing ideas and working in a collaborative style. We offer an opportunity to guide programme development, teach within a cooperative team, and pursue independent research.
Our capital city location brings proximity to relevant government or Parliamentary bodies and provides unique opportunities for staff and students to focus on national and global environmental issues. Of particular relevance are our collaborative relationships with the National Institute for Water and Atmosphere (NIWA) and Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS Science). Both these Crown Research Institutes have their Headquarters based in Wellington and this position offers exciting opportunities to further strengthen these highly productive inter-institutional relationships.
This team and the Geoscience disciplines they represent are vital to the University’s reputation in the physical sciences. In terms of Performance Based Research Funding (PBRF), this position will be lodged within our Earth Sciences team of 44 staff, which is among the largest across all New Zealand Universities and ranked first in Quality overall in the latest census. Internationally in the QS rankings, Earth Sciences at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington has been consistently placed in the 101-150 range in recent years.
