Who are we looking for?

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is seeking a Senior Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Partner
to join Health, Safety and Environment, Student Services and Wellbeing, Administrative Division.

The Senior Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Partner supports operational health, safety and environment functions and programs within the QUT community, relating to the implementation of work health and safety and environment legislation, policy, systems and programs. The role provides guidance, quality advice, and technical and project support on a range of complex HSE matters, including work, teaching and research-based hazards, incident management, training and skill development and risk management requirements. In addition, the position provides operational support, mentoring and guidance to Faculties and Divisions, including with staff and students, and is required to work collaboratively with other service areas across QUT.

To reflect QUT’s growing teaching and research agenda, your skills and experience working as a HSE professional across chemical and/or biological laboratories or research facilities is considered favourable.

About the Administrative Division

Administrative Division supports the governance and operations of the University, including planning and quality, facilities and services for students and staff. The Administrative Division is led by the Vice-President (Administration) and University Registrar.

About Student Services and Wellbeing

The Student Services and Wellbeing portfolio leads the university-wide strategy and coordination of all non-academic matters related to the student experience. The portfolio of Student Services and Wellbeing delivers a range of services across the student life cycle, as well as providing advice and leadership to the university on a broad range of student and staff matters, including social justice and public policy.

Student Services and Wellbeing consists of the following departments: Student Administration, HiQ, Equity, Student Services and Health, Safety & Environment (HSE). The portfolio also has strong links to and works closely with QUT’s Oodgeroo Unit and Human Resources.

Student Services and Wellbeing aspires to be a collaborative, distinctive and innovative department that makes a real and positive difference to students, from pre-tertiary to graduation and beyond. The Department of Health, Safety and Environment (DHSE) plays a key role at QUT, driving advancement through:

  • providing strategic HSE advice and direction to the QUT Faculties and Divisions;
  • the adoption of university-wide systems that enable a safe and healthy working environment and ensure sustainable environmental protection; and
  • collaboration with students and staff for positive health, safety and environment outcomes at QUT.

What you need to succeed

Your expertise and initiative, combined with your ability to work as an excellent team player will be vital to your success in this role.

You will demonstrate:

  • Education, training or experience equivalent to a degree in HSE or related discipline, plus a minimum of five years’ experience in a health and safety or environment role within a large organisation.
  • Proven success in applying and implementing HSE practices, particularly in risk management, safety management systems, and in the interpretation and application of relevant legislation, standards and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing strategies, policies and procedures, and in conducting and coordinating audits related to general HSE hazards.
  • Demonstrated high level effective interpersonal, presentation and consultation skills along with an ability to manage  complex, emotional, or controversial issues.
  • A record of effective collaboration, engagement and partnership with colleagues and clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and lead staff.

    Remuneration: $120,338 to $136,408 pa (HEW8) (inclusive of $101,687 to $115,266 pa salary, 17% superannuation and 17.5% recreation leave loading)
