Senior Engineer in Expandable Multi-Imaging Underwater Acquisition Systems

The Faculty of Technology, Art and Design (TKD) offers higher education and research and development (R&D) activities within technical subjects, arts and design. The Faculty has approximately 4.000 students and 400 staff members and is situated at Pilestredet Campus in downtown Oslo and at Kjeller Campus in Viken.

The Department of Mechanical, Electronic and Chemical Engineering (MEK) is one out of five departments at TKD. The department offers three bachelor’s degree programmes and a master’s degree programme in Electrical Engineering, in addition to research and development activities. The department has approximately 35 staff members, 10 PhD students, and 800 students.

There is a vacancy for a 100% full-time temporary position for 22 months at the Department of Mechanical, Electronic and Chemical Engineering senior engineer in underwater robotics and subsea imaging systems to work as part of EU funded project ANERIS.

The ANERIS project (operAtional seNsing lifE technologies for maRIne ecosystemS) is led by ICM-CSIC in Spain and includes 26 international research and industrial partners. The project proposes to develop the next generation of scientific instrumentation tools and methods for sensing marine life. The design of the new instruments and methods will integrate different types of marine life-sensing technologies: genomics, imaging-bio optics, and participatory sciences. The technologies will be implemented in a codesign framework, involving all the interested stakeholders: academia, industry, civil society, and government. The project proposes the concept of Operational Marine Biology (OMB), understood, as a biodiversity information system for systematic and long-term routine measurements of the ocean and coastal life, and their rapid interpretation and dissemination. OsloMet’s is co-leading one of the project work packages and will be responsible for the development of an Expandable Multi-imaging Underwater Acquisition System (EMUAS). This is a low cost cabled underwater camera system that will allow to obtain real-time video images of underwater sites and is used to automatically generate marine biology and environmental data information. The system will be tested and demonstrated in OsloMet Oceanlab and in two test sites in Spain (OBSEA) and Ireland (SmartBay).

Tasks and responsibilities

• carry out research and development work in the framework of EU project ANERIS
• be responsible for the development of an Expandable Multi-imaging Underwater Acquisition System (EMUAS). This includes mechanical and electronics systems design, manufacturing and testing.
• actively contribute to the development of the department and OsloMet as an institution
• disseminate research both to academic communities and to society in general
• participate in the development of large-scale research projects and applications for external funding together with colleagues in the academic community
• participate in research collaborations with national and international partners

We are looking for applicants who have

• bachelor degree in electronics, mechatronics, or related field
• demonstrable experience in development of complex multi-layer PCB boards including video, audio, and power management that resulted in usable products.
• demonstrable experience in development of firmware, and embedded systems with real time requirements and power consumption limitations
• experience with manufacturing and testing of hardware prototypes that resulted in usable products
• proficiency in both written and spoken English
• ability to communicate and collaborate well with students and colleagues
• personal qualities that make a positive contribution to the working environment

The following will be an advantage

• experience with underwater robotics
• experience with mechanical/mechatronics design, and 3D CAD design
• experience with image and video processing, and communication protocols

The salary for the position is in accordance with the pay scale for Norwegian state employees, 1087 head engineer, salary range NOK 493 700 – 553 500 per year. A higher salary may be considered for particularly well qualified applicants.
