Position Summary

Michigan State University is seeking a Senior Director of Development to conceptualize, plan and execute a coordinated program of philanthropic fund raising, and alumni and constituent relations for the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM). The CVM is seeking candidates who are collaborative, skilled managers who also possess proven exceptional frontline fundraising experience.

Serving as MSU’s chief veterinary medicine development officer, the Senior Director:

• furthers the College’s mission and fundraising objectives through management of the planned giving program, and major gift solicitations.
• maintains a personal prospect portfolio of major and principal gift prospects and employs an aggressive, strategic moves management program to ensure movement along the development pipeline.
• facilitates the participation and works closely with the CVM leadership team, faculty, volunteers, and other members leadership to ensure that the MSU reaches its philanthropic potential from alumni, grateful patients, corporations, and foundations.

Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine was formally established as a four-year, degree-granting program in 1910.  Today, the college includes three biomedical science departments –Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Pathobiology and Diagnostic Investigation, and Pharmacology and Toxicology; two clinical departments — Large Animal Clinical Sciences and Small Animal Clinical Sciences; two service units — the Veterinary Medical Center and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory; and several research centers.  The abundance and variety of animal agriculture and companion animals in Michigan provides the college with one of the largest clinical and diagnostic caseloads in the country. Educational and research opportunities are considerably enhanced by this large caseload which exceeds 27,000 each year.

As part of the University’s upcoming third billion-dollar plus campaign, the Senior Director will play a pivotal leadership role in planning and spearheading the next $100 million+ campaign effort for the College. 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and to the Senior Executive Director of Constituency Programs:

Fundraising:

• Plans and implements comprehensive strategies for prospects through the donor cycle of identification, solicitation and cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, coordinating activities with development colleagues across campus and the geographic regions, where appropriate.
• Works collaboratively with the College leadership to develop and implement strategies, systems, and procedures for advancing individual and collective goals and priorities.
• Plans and implements the major, planned, and principal gifts program for the College as well as funding from other sources, including corporations and foundations.
• Personally, develops and manages a portfolio of major and principal gift prospects, with emphasis on 6- and especially 7-figure gifts.
• Provides assistance to donors regarding tax laws, policies and procedures and resolves problems to maintain a positive image of the University.

Personnel Management:

• Prepares annual operating plan that outlines goals, objectives, and strategies for the overall advancement program as well as for self and each member of the advancement team.
• Hires, directs, motivates, and evaluates professional and support staff to assure consistency with quantity and quality of work performed.
• Recruits, trains, motivates, and evaluates volunteers to accomplish college goals and objectives.

Programmatic Management:

• Audits internal operations to develop standardized procedures and to ensure conformity with established policy.
• Presents at meetings of the public and University personnel to provide information on the College and/or University.
• Develops and monitors budget and expenses to ensure stewardship of university resources and alignment with departmental goals.
• Assists in setting both long- and short-term goals/plans to determine resources required.
• Collaborates and coordinates activities with the communications staff to ensure coordination of information to alumni and friends of the College.

• Coordinates the composing, editing, and publishing of unit and/or University literature related to fundraising priorities to provide staff and volunteers with case statements, progress reports and appropriate stewardship.

• Prepares and interprets statistical data results for college leadership.
• Works with the college’s Marketing and Communications Office to compose, edit and publish college development literature to provide staff and volunteers with campaign progress reports and appropriate stewardship.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year degree program in Communication, Public Relations, Marketing and/or Business; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in professional and higher education fundraising, public relations, marketing, development of budgets, preparation and presentation of case statements and analysis of operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s degree required; Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Business and/or Agriculture or Science-related preferred.
• Seven to ten years in professional fund raising preferably five or more progressively responsible professional experience in higher education development; meaningful experience in or knowledge of all key development areas (major giving, annual fund, planned giving, and corporate and foundation relations).
• Proven ability to cultivate, solicit, and steward leadership gifts at the six- and seven-figure level.
• A track record of administrative skills and the ability to establish objectives, set performance standards, and organize and motivate staff, faculty, and volunteers to achieve college fundraising goals.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to plan and successfully execute a significant comprehensive campaign.
• Working knowledge of tax laws affecting charitable giving.
• The ability to travel regionally and nationally.
• Travel, evening/weekend work, and valid driver’s license all required for this position.
