Senior Director

Job Description:

The Office for Belonging, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (OBDEI), in the Division of Biology and Medicine is responsible for establishing and enforcing policies and initiatives to promote an inclusive and equitable learning and working environment for students, medical trainees, faculty and staff. The OBDEI serves to connect The Brown Medical School, the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED), and affiliated clinical partners to ensure that diversity and equity are high level priorities and collaboratively works across organizational systems to implement effective policies and initiatives impacting 2500 faculty, 1000 graduate students, (across 9 graduate programs) 1000 clinical residents and fellows (represented by 27 residency programs and 84 fellowship programs), 185 undergrads and 80 post-docs. The OBDEI maintains key relationships with the Office of the General Counsel (OGC), BioMed Human Resources, affiliated hospitals’ human resources departments, Clinical Departments and Basic Science Departments within the Division of Biology and Medicine, the Office of Women in Medicine and Science, the Office of BioMed Faculty Administration, and the Offices of Medical Education and Student Affairs at AMS in order to support the inclusive mission of the Medical School.

The OBDEI is made up of (5) centers: The center for Health Equity, the center for Workforce Recruitment and Retention, the center for Education and Curricular Innovation, the center for Student Belonging and the center for Community Engagement and Pipeline Programming. These centers will work collaboratively to move the mission of DEI forward for the Medical School and our affiliated clinical partners, while advancing their specific objectives. The center for Health Equity will be responsible for evaluating health disparities across the state through partnership with our clinical enterprises, the RIDOH, and the Brown School of Public Health, developing evidenced based practices and policies to address these disparities and incorporating these policies into the education of learners at the Medical School and the clinical enterprises. The center for Education and Curricular Innovation will develop novel curricula designed to address the needs of marginalized and minoritized patients, advise the Medical School on the inclusivity of current curricula, will lead trainings and education of all staff on anti-racism, gender-affirming care, and accessibility, evaluate the effectiveness of these trainings, and lead the Brown Advocates for Social Change and Equity yearlong fellowship program. The center for Workforce Recruitment and Retention will support and expand the Office for Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (ODMA) Faculty Association, provide and structure professional development opportunities for UIM Faculty, support and allocate the Dean’s Diversity Fund, support the Brown Minority Housestaff Association (BMHA) and the Brown Sexual Gender and Minority Alliance (BSGMA), provide career resources for these resident and fellow groups, and support and execute programming for Mentoring and Educating Diverse Students and Trainees to Excel as Physicians (MEDSTEP). The center for Student Belonging will support the Medical School Affinity Groups which represent minoritized students (SNMA, LMSA, APAMSA, SPECTRUM and WC4BL) as well as Tougaloo students, programming for UIM students (such as Brother-2-Brother and Together Everyone Achieves More) and partner with the Office of Student Affairs and the Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) office to understand the unique needs of UIM students. The center for Community Engagement and Pipeline Programming will support the SMART Clinic and associated pathway program at Calcutt Middle School in Central Falls, and all other pathway programming at the Medical School (Leadership Alliance, Month of Medicine, Week of Medicine, Tougaloo EIP, On the Horizon). The center will also develop and maintain collaborative relationships with Brown University VP of Community Engagement, the RIDOH Health Equity Zones, VP of Lifespan Community Engagement, RI Association for Community Health Workers, Clinica Esperanza, RI Free Clinic and the RI Foundation and support ongoing mission development and programming in community engagement.

The Senior Director is responsible for effective communication and collaboration across the 5 centers, establishing efficient operational procedures, managing external-facing relationships with key partners, engaging in outreach to important stakeholders and supervising and managing administrative and programmatic staff. Working in close collaboration with the Senior Associate Dean for DEI and as a trusted member of the senior team, the Senior Director will work to implement new strategic initiatives, expand research, maintain a culture of accountability and service, and strengthen and align clinical partnerships. This position manages complex projects and plays a critical role in strategic planning, decision-making, and execution of decisions to advance the DEI mission of the Division. Serving as an advisor and liaison, the Senior Director represents the interests and priorities of the OBDEI through effective communication, coordination, and integration of strategic priorities and objectives.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required (Master’s degree preferred)

  • Plus 8-10 years’ work-related experience, 5-7 years’ experience with hospital and/or clinical environment required (experience with academic medical centers preferred)

  • Advanced knowledge of the higher education environment and/or large research university to understand priorities, issue, motivations, and constraints preferred

  • Or, equivalent combination of education/experience.
