Position description

The Senior Business Development Specialist (Senior BDS) will be a key member of the New Business Development (NBD) team and wider Institutional Advancement (IA) department. S/he will support International Medical Corps’ positioning for and pursuit of new competitive, complex, and strategic funding opportunities, with an emphasis on public, governmental, and institutional donors. S/he will work with technical, operational, headquarters, and field-based teams to guide prepositioning and capture planning processes for strategic country-specific, regional and global opportunities. The Senior BDS will utilize his/her knowledge and skills of the business development cycle, combined with an entrepreneurial attitude, to offer specialized support to diverse teams and initiatives. S/he will provide overall management throughout the program and proposal development cycle to ensure bids meet high quality standards, are responsive and competitive. The Senior BDS will lead IMC’s most strategic, complex and high-value opportunities. When feasible, the Senior BDS will periodically travel for field-based deployments to support country programs with NBD initiatives and pursuits.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

•  Support country programs on strategic prepositioning efforts related to relevant technical sectors and anticipated funding opportunities, including partner and donor mapping, relationship development with key partners/stakeholders, guidance and preparation for donor engagement.

•  Contribute to the NBD team’s efforts to track, manage, and share information about priority donors’ business forecasts, pre-solicitations, funding strategies, proposal guidelines, and notices of funding opportunities.

•  Develop and manage relationships with strategic partners, including prospective prime and/or sub-awardee partner agencies, academic institutions and private sector entities; lead and coordinate the teaming process and negotiation of roles within proposal consortia; support team members’ preparation for and participation in relevant partner engagement.

•  Manage, interpret, and summarize donor solicitations, including eligibility, programmatic, and cost requirements to contribute to opportunity assessments, analysis of comparative advantage and decisions to pursue.

•  Provide comprehensive proposal management for an assigned portfolio, including developing and implementing capture planning and strategies, facilitation of program design workshops, as well as coordination of: resources and team members, technical inputs, development cost application, communications, teaming (with primes and subs), review processes, copyediting, and writing of non-technical sections. The Senior BDS portfolio will include the leadership of the most strategic, complex and high-value opportunities. 

•  Collaborate across technical and operational departments to evaluate and strengthen International Medical Corps’ proposed programmatic solutions and approaches to ensure bids are responsive to solicitations, score well against evaluation criteria, and incorporate competitive win themes.

•  Lead and coordinate the development of capacity statements and external communications material in collaboration with country program, global, and technical teams. 

•  Represent NBD and the broader Institutional Advancement department on regional platforms, routine country program calls, and with other internal working groups as needed or assigned.

•  Manage special projects that support the growth of the NBD department and its multi-year strategy, as needed or assigned; projects may include developing new and/or improving tools and resources, procedures and processes, staff trainings, etc.

•  The Senior BDS will support the Senior Manager, NBD in providing mentorship to NBD team members and guidance across different departments in the organization to pursue strategic, complex and high-value opportunities.

Qualifications

•  Typically, a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, International Development, International Relations, or related field. Master’s Degree in relevant field is preferred. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

•  Typically, 8+ years of relevant and progressive experience in international program development and/or management. 

•  Substantial experience and a successful track record leading large proposal teams on complex, high-value multi-year, multi-partner proposals with minimal supervision.

•  Experience with developing and working in consortia with strategic partners.

•  Experience in international programming focused on health, and/or related humanitarian assistance sectors.

•  International field-based program/project management experience desirable. 

•  Essential previous program design experience of high-value and complex opportunities

•  Significant experience managing capture planning processes.

•  Familiarity and past experience with a wider donor landscape, including, USAID/BHA, FCDO, CDC, GAC, EU, ECHO, SDC, SIDA, World Bank, UN Agencies, etc. 

•  Strong familiarity with US, UK, and European governmental donors, including technical and cost requirements.

•  Strong familiarity with US, UK, and European governmental donors, including technical and cost requirements.

•  Knowledge of foreign aid architecture, including humanitarian and development funding mechanisms.

•  Demonstrated skills in coordinating, facilitating, and managing complex processes with diverse team members.

•  Familiarity with international development programming strategies and approaches.

•  Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills. 

•  Solutions-oriented and entrepreneurial approach to initiatives.

•  Strong organizational and time management skills, with ability to coordinate multiple projects with competing priorities.

•  Demonstrated strategic thinking, creativity, acute problem solving, and analytical skills;  

•  Strong computer skills

•  Skills in data and information management a plus.

•  Skills in designing and facilitating trainings desirable.

•  Familiarity with differences between humanitarian and development programming a plus.

•  Fluency in written and spoken English is essential

•  French, Arabic, or Spanish skills a plus

•  Ability and willingness to travel internationally (20% – 50% based on need and feasibility of travel).

SALARY RANGE: Mid $80’s to Mid $100s

For positions filled in the United States, the typical salary range for this role is as state above. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, job level, internal equity and budget. Exact salary offers will be determined by factors such as the candidate’s skills, qualifications, experience and geographic location.
