Job Location: Birch Aquarium is located at 2300 Expedition Way, La Jolla, CA 92037

Under supervision, perform semi-skilled building maintenance tasks regularly and continuously for the Aquarium. Responsible for the maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment using tools of the trade. Tasks include but are not limited to repairing sea water pumps, heat exchanges, interior/exterior lighting, soldering and pipefitting, and carpentry tasks. Responsible for troubleshooting maintenance problems while working with the Facilities Manager and the Husbandry unit’s Life Support Coordinator. Monitor seawater systems. Perform custodial duties as needed. Prep for painting and touch-up painting. Set up and clean up for special events as needed.

  • This position will also receive the $0.67 evening shift differential for any shifts after 5 PM.
  • Two (2) years of experience in the performance of semi-skilled building maintenance work, or one year as a Building Maintenance Worker, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to read technical instruction manuals and drawings.

  • Ability to work independently and complete tasks without supervision.

  • Knowledge of safe handling and disposal techniques for refrigerant chemicals and parts.

  • Knowledge of all safety procedures to be followed when working in a maintenance/custodial setting.

  • General knowledge of wiring and installation of electrical components.

  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude; knowledge of building maintenance

  • Plumbing and water system maintenance, repair, and installation skills.

  • Carpentry skills; ability to use hand and power tools.

  • Ability to express work and equipment in technical terms or terms of the trade.

  • Experience using electrical multi-meter and amp probe.

  • Experience using soft soldering equipment (propane/MAPP/acetyle gas hand torch).

  • Proven experience using hand tools and all equipment common to the building maintenance trades.

  • Knowledge and ability to work safely according to local, federal, and state requirements.

  • The job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
  • Must possess a California driver’s license; ability to drive department truck or personal vehicle.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs. Must be physically able to perform essential functions of the position.
  • Must be able to work a prearranged day, swing, or graveyard shift, including some weekends and holidays.
  • Regular work schedule is Tuesday – Saturday, 2:30 – 11:00 PM, but flexible as required.
  • Duties may require direct contact with children (defined as individuals under the age of 18); completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) training will be required. Must meet CANRA compliance requirements per California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (“CANRA,” Penal Code sections 11164-11174.4).
