Description of Work Unit The Colorado State University Department of Athletics sponsors 16 men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports and competes as a member of the NCAA Division I-FBS and the Mountain West Conference. The University is located in Fort Collins, Colorado, 65 miles north of Denver. Position Summary The Senior Associate Athletics Director for Development manages external development operations for the Department of Athletics in the areas of philanthropy, development, and major gifts. Individual is responsible for generating gifts as well as alumni and friends support for Colorado State University and its 16 NCAA Div. I intercollegiate athletics programs.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in communications, sports management, business, marketing, management, liberal arts, sociology, public relations or any other field related to duties and responsibilities required
  • Minimum of five years of progressive fund-raising/development experience with a proven record of success in identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding special or major gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations, preferably in a university/higher education environment require
  • Demonstrated skill in developing and attaining fundraising goals require
  • Experience successfully managing staff and volunteers required
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with internal and external constituencies including a proven track record of strong interpersonal communication and relationship-building skills required
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written/electronic communication skills required
  • Previous experience in intercollegiate athletics required, preferably at the NCAA Division I level
  • Ability to hire, lead and motivate a staff of highly qualified and specialized individuals
  • Ability to work autonomously and establish priorities
  • High level of initiative, creativity and energy
  • Proficiency in a variety of software products
  • Ability to prioritize projects and duties; assign responsibilities; multi-task; meet deadlines and deliver results
  • Knowledge of appropriate NCAA rules and regulations and a commitment to the Department’s culture of compliance
  • Ability to act responsibly and ethically within the parameters of institutional control
  • Commitment to conduct all activities in compliance with NCAA, Mountain West Conference and Colorado State University rules and regulations
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Experience with fund raising for major and complex capital projects including major facilities preferred

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category Senior Leadership
Duty/Responsibility •Provide senior leadership, management, strategic planning and oversight for the fundraising operations of the Department
•Work with Director of Athletics and other members of senior staff to develop and implement a strategic development plan for the department
•Maximize philanthropic giving through individual, corporate and foundation giving as well as estate and deferred giving
•Plan and execute a comprehensive strategy to promote and optimize philanthropic support on local, regional and national levels
•Hire, train, manage and evaluate a staff of direct reports to achieve measurable fundraising goals
•Promote major gift opportunities aligned with the priorities and strategic plan identified by the Department of Athletics
•Serve as a member of the Department’s Executive Management Team
•Oversee the budget for athletics development
•Serve as the sports administrator for Div. I intercollegiate sports program(s) as assigned, working closely with head coach, staff and student-athletes in the overall oversight and development of the program
•Be knowledgeable of NCAA and conference rules and regulations, promptly report any knowledge of rules violations, and contribute proactively to the Department’s culture of compliance

Duty/Responsibility •Manage a major gift donors/prospects portfolio for the purpose of developing leadership giving and providing private support to fund capital priorities and endowments
•Design and manage annual and capital campaigns
•Work closely and collaboratively with the Athletic Marketing and Ticket Offices in executing an annual premium and priority seating program
•Supervise three major gift officers and a development coordinator
•Work closely with all 16-varsity sports in enhancing their sports giving and alumni/booster clubs

Job Duty Category Engagement and Collaboration
Duty/Responsibility •Ensure that all gifts are processed according to CSU Foundation policy and that donors are appropriately recognized and stewarded
•Collaborate with University Advancement in all areas of development, including planned gift arrangements that require tax or estate planning
•Work closely with University Advancement to ensure cooperation with other development professionals throughout the University
•Collaborate on the management of any re-seating/indexing of current and future venues for the department
•Cultivate and maintain effective relationships with former athletes, boosters, alumni, business and community leaders and other constituent groups.
