Position purpose:

The Manager of Culture and Safe Sport is instrumental in cultivating a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment within the Recreation and Varsity Sports (RVS) department. This vital role encompasses several critical responsibilities, including policy development and implementation, compliance and incident management, engagement and advocacy, and education and training. Additionally, the Manager actively promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring that all student-athletes and staff are treated fairly and with respect regardless of their background. These dedicated efforts contribute significantly to promoting a positive atmosphere, enhancing the overall experience for everyone involved.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

Policy Development and Implementation

  • Develop and implement comprehensive safe sport policies and procedures in accordance with national standards and institutional guidelines.
  • Regularly review and update policies to ensure they remain current and effective.
  • Work closely with the Recreation and Varsity Sports (RVS). Campus Safety, Counseling Services, Student leadership bodies and other relevant departments to ensure a coordinated approach to student-athlete and participant safety.
  • Liaise with national and regional sport organizations to stay informed about best practices and emerging trends

Compliance & Incident Management

  • Monitor compliance with safe sport policies, liase with independant third party to address, investigate and adjudicate complaints according to best practices in sport and report any violations to the appropriate internal or external authorities.
  • Maintain accurate records of training, incident reports, and other relevant documentation.
  • Develop action plans to address incidents and prevent future occurrences

Engagement and Advocacy 

  • Promote a culture of safety, respect, and inclusion within RVS.
  • Engage with the broader campus community to raise awareness about safe sport initiatives and resources.
  • Collect student-athlete feedback throughout and at the conclusion of the year and assist with process for exit interviews of graduating student-athletes or those leaving programs before graduation.
  • Serve as a confidential resource for student-athletes and staff to report concerns or incidents of negative behaviours, including abuse, harassment,or misconduct.
  • Provide guidance and support to individuals affected by safe sport issues, ensuring access to appropriate resources and services
  • Conduct and recommend changes to the Dispute Resolution Policy as required.

Education and Training

  • Design mandatory safe sport training programs for coaches, staff, and student-athletes, staying abreast of key issues in sport nationally and at the university levels
  • Conduct annual workshops and seminars on relevant topics related to safe sport and equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Ensure compliance with league and conference training policies;

What you will bring:

  • University degree, preferably a graduate degree, in Sport Science or Sports Management or another combination of training and experience deemed equivalent.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience for the job.
  • Experience working in Safe Sport and EDI management, and Alternate Dispute Resolution process (ADR).

The rating is determined by a proficiency test designed by the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute.

Prior to May 1, 2022, the University required all students, faculty, staff, and visitors (including contractors) to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 as defined in Policy 129 – Covid-19 Vaccination. This policy was suspended effective May 1, 2022 but may be reinstated at any point in the future depending on public health guidelines and the recommendations of experts.
