Position Summary:
Florida Atlantic University seeks a talented and strategic Senior Advancement Writer for Principal Gifts to serve as the primary proposal writer and editor for the Division of Institutional Advancement, ensuring solicitation and stewardship materials meet the highest possible standards for editorial quality.
The Senior Advancement Writer engages in the development of proposals, concept papers, highly tailored impact reports, campaign-related materials and other writing that supports principal gift initiatives; interviews faculty, administrators, and staff, as necessary, to develop compelling content and deepen the understanding of University programs and priorities; and works to ensure, in partnership with FAU’s Division of Public Affairs, a consistent brand message for Institutional Advancement, and Florida Atlantic and its colleges and units, through written materials.
Devoting approximately 51% of the time to Principal Gifts and 49% to the rest of Advancement, the Senior Advancement Writer clearly and persuasively conveys complex messages in long form and short form, in a variety of media, including electronic and print, and in tone and style at levels of detail and technical depth for diverse audiences. Reporting to the Executive Director of Advancement Communications, the Proposal Writer will experience the opportunities and responsibilities appropriate for a communications professional in a university preparing for the public phase of a historic comprehensive campaign.
Summary of Responsibilities include:
Serves as a primary writer and editor for the Division of Institutional Advancement, ensuring that all solicitation and stewardship materials meet the highest possible standards for editorial quality, while conveying a consistent brand message.
In collaboration with the Division’s leadership, development officers, deans, faculty and staff, the Senior Advancement Writer’s main responsibilities are to develop customized proposals and customized impact reports for principal gift donors; and creative communication to foster awareness of the impact of giving and inspire philanthropy.
Serves as a chief proposal writer for University Advancement; identifies opportunities and develops proposals for individual, corporate, and foundation donors; demonstrates experience with content development, research and fact verification.
Manages the proposal development process from inception through submission.
Oversees routing of proposals among appropriate University constituents; reviews proposals to ensure appropriate requests and compliance with donor guidelines and University priorities.
Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to write and edit high-level content for development communications, including case statements, impact statements, summaries of preeminent research and signature programs, key messages/talking points and other giving related writing needs to support fundraising and the comprehensive campaign.
Researches existing and emerging campus priorities to create standard written descriptions of key initiatives that may be used by development officers and others in the creation of communication to internal and external stakeholders.
Edits solicitation and stewardship materials, such as select gift acknowledgements and endowment reports, prepared by Annual Giving, Major and Principal Gifts, and Donor Relations and Stewardship.
Writes compelling articles and communication pieces for other print and digital media focused on the significance of philanthropy and engagement with FAU.
Tracks metrics to measure performance.
Ensures quality control of written materials for the Institutional Advancement Division.
Communicates directly with Communications staff on project status, needs and expected deadlines.
Actively participates in the strategy and planning for fund-raising campaigns by attending relevant fund raising and campaign-related meetings.
Works with College development officers on developing communication tools to assist in fundraising for their college/unit.
Keeps abreast of fundraising, communication and digital communication best practices.
Protects confidential information.
Performs other job-related duties, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of appropriate experience; or a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and six years of appropriate experience required.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel and PowerPoint required.
