The Faculty of Law has the following full-time vacancy: senior academic staff in the field of labour law and logistics & transport law

Position

You will contribute to the University of Antwerp’s three core tasks: education, research and services. Your role also includes organisational and managerial aspects.

Education

  • You provide high-quality education in the field of labour law and logistics & transport law.
  • Your teaching role evolves along with the study programmes. The courses you teach may include
    • Arbeidsrecht (bachelor of laws)
    • Advanced course on international commercial transactions (master of laws and LL.M)
    • Grondige studie Individueel arbeidsrecht (master of laws)
    • Transport law (master of laws and LL.M and study programmes at the Faculty of Business and Economics)
  • You play a role in developing activating, student-centred and competence-driven programme components and study programmes.
  • You supervise students and their Master dissertations.

Research

  • You expand high-quality scientific research in the field of labour law and logistics & transport law and at the interfaces between these two fields. You will pay particular attention to current social challenges such as the social law status of freelancers and (pseudo) self-employed workers in the contract chain of the economy in general and the logistics sector in particular.
  • You initiate new lines of research and coordinate the progress of scientific research projects, with special attention to intra- and interdisciplinary cooperation with research groups  within the Faculty of Law and in other faculties at the UAntwerp.
  • You acquire and manage national and international research funding.
  • You publish in international journals and specialist literature.
  • You develop an international scientific network.
  • You supervise PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.
  • You actively contribute to the development of valorisation research from Pharus , both via Valorisation Office  and the Ecosystems & Innovation Hub .

Services

  • You play a role in the provision of both academic services and service to society, within the institution and externally. You participate in student recruitment, boards and committees, popular science communication, and so on.

Organisation and leadership

  • You accept coordinating responsibilities in the areas of teaching, research and/or service provision and you contribute to policy.
  • Your leadership style is motivating and coaching. You are attentive to your employees’ growth and development processes.

Profile

  • You hold the degrees of Master of Laws and Doctor of Laws on dissertation.
  • You submit the following documents in English:
    • a vision statement for the programme components you will lecture. You can also make suggestions for new programme components in the broad domain of labour law and logistics & transport law. You can find the study programmes of the Faculty of Law online .
    • a detailed research proposal for the next five years (approx. 5.000 words) based on the research lines of at least one of the research groups of the Faculty of Law and in which you also approach the research from an international perspective. You focus on your strategy on research funding acquisitions, publications and network building. You also include a concise description (1 page) of a PhD research you intend to supervise.
    • two abstracts of the scientific content of the research plan – a scientific abstract and an abstract in layman’s terms – maximum 500 words.

The prior conditions are conditions of admissibility.

  • You can demonstrate several years of postdoctoral experience (or equivalent).
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies . You have established an excellent research portfolio.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision . You are motivated to develop your teaching skills further through the professionalisation opportunities  available.
  • You can demonstrate a CEFR C1 level of proficiency of English and Dutch.
  • You demonstrate leadership potential and organisational skills.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.

What we offer

  • We offer a full-time appointment as a member of the senior academic staff (Dutch: Zelfstandig Academisch Personeel, ZAP) (the allocation of the appointment is subject to the availability of financial resources at the time of appointment). The level of your appointment (associate professor or higher) will be determined on the basis of your professional experience and academic qualifications. An appointment leads to a permanent position after a maximum of three years. A favourable performance appraisal is always required for permanent appointment.
  • Your gross monthly salary is calculated according to the pay scales  for senior academic staff.
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • The planned start date is 1 March 2023 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • You will do most of your work at the City Campus in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
