Senior Academic Advisor

Provides academic advising to undergraduate students in the College of Education and Human Ecology (EHE). Maintains an expertise in EHE undergraduate programs and communicates curricular information to assists students in selecting courses consistent with their developing goals and interests. Documents and maintains notes of interactions with students. Helps students to understand university and college procedures. Assists in training and onboarding new advisors. Works closely with the Academic Advisor Manager and unit director team to interface with Education cluster departments on student issues, scheduling concerns, and cluster-specific initiatives.

Coordinates EHE’s undergraduate commencement activities. Liaison to university commencement contacts, particularly with the Office of the Registrar. Coordinates communications to EHE students and advisors regarding commencement related items. Manages the workflow of submitted graduation applications; trains advising staff. Facilitate degree certification and Latin Honors actions within EHE. Facilitates grade checks at each end of term for advising staff.

Participates in new student orientation sessions. Assists with recruitment efforts as needed. Possesses knowledge of all university and college resources related to the student experience, from admissions to graduation, and makes sensible referrals. Collaborates with the larger Academic Affairs unit on a range of team-based initiatives, including committee work, support of advising, recruitment, retention, and scholarships. At all times handles interactions with civility, respect and professionalism to promote and create a welcoming atmosphere for all faculty, staff, students, and customers, as well as, maintains confidentiality in all matters of business responsibility and student involvement. 

60% – Fosters student success by defining and implementing proactive strategies through one-on-one advising that help students stay on track to fulfill their educational goals. Provides counsel on general education, prerequisites, and major courses for specific programs, including course sequencing, minors, dual degrees, etc. Advises students dealing with academic, probationary, and financial concerns. Reviews and processes add/drops, withdrawals, and program changes. Provides referrals to appropriate units for financial, mental health and other services. Advises students on University policies and procedures, program and degree requirements, and related academic matters. 

30% – Coordinates EHE’s undergraduate student commencement responsibilities. Serves as point person for commencement functions. Manages workflow of graduation application submissions and next steps. Leads degree certification procedures prior to commencement dates. Coordinates day-of commencement activities for EHE undergraduate students; arranges staff help; ensures line numbering plan.

5% – Assists in functions specific to the Education cluster within the academic advising team. May include participation in major admissions processes, student scheduling plans, and licensure verification.

Required Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Higher Education or related field. Evidence of a commitment to using a diversity lens in previous work.

Desired Qualifications: 3-5 years of academic advising experience.

The Target Hiring Range for this position is $46,100 – $61,500.
