Description

We are hiring one (1) seasonal Wildlife Technician to assist with a project surveying for plains spotted skunks in southeastern Oklahoma from early January through early May 2023. Spotted skunks are rare and elusive. The selected candidate will work closely with a graduate student to conduct camera trapping for plains spotted skunks. The selected candidate must be able (and willing) to hike long distances (up to 10 km per day), over difficult terrain, in potentially extreme conditions (e.g., both cold winter conditions and warm spring temperatures and humidity). The selected candidate should anticipate, and be comfortable with, having limited connectivity (i.e., internet or cellular service) and shared (potentially co-ed) living conditions in a small travel trailer (or similar accommodations). The selected candidate should be comfortable approaching and communicating with private landowners before accessing private lands if necessary. Additional duties may involve habitat sampling, image review/classification, data entry and management, and equipment maintenance.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
• Progress towards a bachelor’s degree in wildlife ecology, biology, ecology, or closely related field
• Ability to lift and carry over 50 pounds
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with coworkers and supervisors
• Ability to maintain a positive and mature attitude and good sense of humor, even under harsh, inclement, or uncomfortable conditions (e.g., inclement weather, biting insects, venomous snakes)
• ≥6 months of field experience with wildlife surveys, demonstrating an ability to work in a remote setting and hike over difficult terrain
• Highly motivated with a strong work ethic
• A valid US driver’s license (without restrictions)

Desired Qualifications:
• B.S. in wildlife management, natural resources, or a closely related discipline
• Experience using camera traps to monitor wildlife as part of an ecological study
