Search for new physics with LHC data and developing ultra-fast silicon detectors

We have one fully-funded place for a new PhD student to join our LHCb team, working in the particle physics group at the University of Birmingham, exploring the latest LHC data collected with the LHCb experiment. You will measureme extremely rare decays produced at the LHC to search for physics that is outside the current Standard Model of Particle Physics, following our recent work on lepton universality measurements.

You can also join our leading work on detector development for the next major upgrade (2032+) of the LHCb detector, which includes detector optimisation studies and hardware R&D focussed on ultra-precise silicon detectors and read-out systems for the ultra-high rate, as well as ongoing contributions to the VELO tracking detector in currently running LHCb data taking.

Full PhD funding is available for a UK national (or EU/settled status) applicant, covering the costs of tuition fees, travel needed for the project, and a stipend for living expenses. The project also includes the option for a long-term attachment (one year) at CERN.
