Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Financial Aid Compliance and Systems Specialist, the Scholarship Coordinator is primarily responsible for overseeing the selection of student recipients for private scholarships, waiver and grant programs and awards managed by the SCSU Foundation, and to ensure the effective allocation of these awards to meet institutional and enrollment goals. The Scholarship Coordinator will use Financial Aid and Foundation policies, procedures and best practices as appropriate to analyze fund criteria and student fit, as well as the financial needs of student applicants, and to develop appropriate financial aid packages.

Position Responsibilities

Serves as the primary financial aid liaison to Institutional Advancement regarding scholarships and awards managed by the SCSU Foundation.

Performs verification as required by awarding agencies, federal and state regulations, and University policies. Serves as a liaison with parents and students, campus faculty, and administrators, and other interests to provide students and the University with effective and efficient service.

Serve as primary coordinator for outside scholarships, tuition and other waivers, as well as internal scholarship programs, athletic scholarships, or other scholarship programs as they are implemented. This position also serves as dual control and back up for the Student Loan and Grant Administrator for disbursement and COD processing.

In coordination with the Institutional Advancement (IA) staff, oversees the scholarship process, for endowed as well as annual scholarships and awards.

In collaboration with the Compliance Specialist, assists in the design and executing the application, collection, notification, selection and tracking process for all Foundation scholarships with input from appropriate partners in IA. Ensures that all scholarship funding is processed according to Foundation and Institutional policies. Provides diligent administration of university aid programs to prevent over awards of scholarships, guaranteed student loans, and work-study earnings.

Through collaboration, provides guidance to IA for the development of new scholarship funds to ensure proper alignment with financial aid policies and best practices and to ensure an awarding strategy that supports enrollment and retention goals.

May supervise support staff or part time employees.

Performs other duties related to those enumerated above which do not alter the basic level of the responsibility of the position.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of experience in financial aid administration. An advanced degree is preferred. Must possess well developed written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated ability to exercise tact and judgment with a diverse population in a service-oriented environment, knowledge and understanding of financial aid practices and able to work independently. Knowledge of NextGen or other scholarship management tools, COD, NSLDS, EdConnect and/or Banner computer systems is preferred. These qualifications may be waived for individuals with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
