Scholarly Communication & Research Data Management Librarian

The Harris Learning Library invites applications for a Scholarly Communication and Research Data Management Librarian. This position is located in North Bay, Ontario.

Serving Nipissing University and Canadore College, the Harris Learning Library supports and advances teaching, learning, and research for students, staff, and faculty of both institutions. The Harris Learning Library is a member of CRKN, OCUL, CLO, OCLS and participates in the shared OCUL Collaborative Futures platform. Serving a combined student population of approximately 7,000, the library is a busy, vibrant and welcoming setting for students. The library’s robust holdings include electronic resources, monographs, and a wide variety of kits supporting the programs and research of both institutions. We have a strong Information Literacy Instruction program, delivering approximately 250 sessions for just over 8,300 students this past year. In addition to support for academic activities, our friendly staff conduct various user engagement activities: weekly visits by St. John’s Ambulance Therapy Dogs, stressbusters for student relaxation (e.g. puzzles, knitting, and games), colorful displays promoting library resources, and recreational materials (e.g. popular books and magazines for leisure reading, musical instruments, sports equipment, tabletop/board games, DVDs).

The ideal candidate will have:
• A Master of Library and Information Studies degree from an ALA accredited program
• Three to five years of directly related experience with scholarly communication / publishing and Open Access scholarship and an understanding of the emerging and rapidly changing issues, trends, and practices in scholarly communication
• Directly related experience with bibliometrics, altmetrics, research data management, research data security, curation, preservation, and manipulation
• Extensive knowledge of issues, trends, and practices in scholarly communication and Open Access scholarship, author rights, research data management, copyright, ethics processes, fair dealing practices, use rights, and intellectual property legislation
• Familiarity and experience with technology and software applications used in academic library services with a particular emphasis on those related to software systems and tools specific to scholarly communication and research data management, Institutional Repositories, and Integrated Library Systems
• Familiarity with ACRL Information Literacy Framework/Standards, and ACRL, and CARL statements on Scholarly Communication and Research Data Management
• Foundational knowledge of library principles and practices, Intellectual Freedom, ethics, privacy and confidentiality
• Experience providing reference service and library instruction sessions
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to implement course of action or make recommendations within the scope of the position
• Demonstrated use of good judgment in decision making within scope of the position
• Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills, particularly the ability to explain complex concepts to a diverse audience and a wide variety of library users
• Excellent time management skills with the ability to manage projects and handle multiple priorities; ability and flexibility to adjust workflows as priorities shift
• Ability to work independently as well as in a team-based consultative environment in a rapidly changing environment
• Strong customer service values

Reporting to the Executive Director, Library Services, the Scholarly Communication and Research Data Management Librarian will support research, teaching and learning by providing leadership and guidance with scholarly communication, data services, research data management, and Open Education Resources. The scope of responsibilities includes developing and implementing policies, procedures, and best practices for the provision of scholarly communication and research data management services. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with the Office of Research, Innovation, and Graduate Studies and other institutional departments in the development of scholarly communication services and research data management services, including best practices that support researchers, institutional research, and Open Access initiatives that meet Canadian Tri-Council Open Access compliance requirements. The Scholarly Communication & Research Data Management Librarian will liaise with external contacts specific to scholarly communication and research data management (i.e. consortium, provincial and national programs, and committees). The Scholarly Communication & Research Data Management Librarian will also monitor legislative developments, trends, new models, and issues in Open Access, scholarly communication, research data management, licensing, use and author rights, copyright, fair dealing, and open education.

The Scholarly Communication & Research Data Management Librarian will support, manage, and promote online publishing and repository services through the Nipissing Dataverse, and the Nipissing collection in the University of Toronto’s institutional repository, and Journal Publishing Service on Open Journal Systems.

Related responsibilities include promoting awareness of Open Access scholarship, scholarly publishing options, methods of measuring research impact, author rights, and stewarding of access to government documents. Other duties include reviewing and managing scholarly communication and research data management software tools, liaising activities with subject areas, collection development, information literacy instruction, research appointments and reference services. Work in collaboration with the Executive Director, Manager of Access Services, librarians, library staff, faculty, staff and the Research offices of Nipissing University and Canadore College. The successful candidate will participate in academic service and professional development activities through committee work, workshops, and conferences.

The annual salary will correspond with qualifications and experience and will follow the Nipissing University Faculty Association (NUFA) Collective Agreement.
