PROJECT DESCRIPTION Saguaro National Park’s Rincon Mountain District is a “sky island” in southern Arizona, one of a number of isolated mountain ranges that rise from the desert into mixed-conifer forests at high elevations. Due to its large elevational range, location near sub-tropical ecosystems of central Mexico, and a surprising number of springs, Saguaro is one of the most biologically diverse parks in the United States. Saguaro National Park is 78% roadless wilderness, and much of the work requires long-hikes The applicant should be aware that the work can be physically difficult, with hiking most days and temperatures that may exceed 90 degrees even in late October. The intern should be prepared and physically capable to take on extremely difficult fieldwork in these conditions. The intern would work with a diverse crew of other interns and biological technicians to monitor natural resources in wilderness areas of Saguaro National Park. Work will include habitat restoration, invasive species removal, monitoring of saguaros, and enhancement of visitor access through trail improvements. The crew will also work alongside Saguaro National Park staff to help restore riparian areas. Less precipitation, increased drought, and higher temperatures as a result of climate change reduce water and impact riparian plants and animals. Efforts will again include invasive species removal accompanied by restoration of native plants. The crew will support long-term monitoring, especially studies of how saguaros and other Sonoran Desert plants are responding to climate change. They will be involved in a long-term project to improve wildlife connectivity in the park by making boundary fences wildlife-friendly and removing old grazing fences that are no longer needed. These fences are an impediment to animals to move freely through the park and adjacent national forest lands.
Qualifications
It is essential that the interns have 1) a proven background in hiking and camping and a strong interest in physically-challenging work 2) social skills that will make them a strong, positive team player on a diverse crew in a remote, backcountry setting. 4) Experience working outdoors in varying climates, on steep slopes, and ability to carry up to 30 pounds.
