Scholarship information

The Sage Family Southeast Asian Studies Scholarship is a tribute to William W. Sage’s interest in a lifelong work in Laos and Southeast Asia and is in loving memory and honor of his parents, Lloyd G. and Twyla M. Sage.

William Sage earned his B.A in Political Science from ASU in 1968. As an undergraduate student, he was interested in international affairs, particularly foreign student affairs. After graduating, he volunteered for the International Voluntary Services (IVS), a Peace Corps-like organization working in a number of countries around the world, like Laos. Throughout his career, Sage continued to work and support refugees. In 2001, he was honored with the ASU’s Founder’s Day Alumni Achievement Award for his significant professional and humanitarian achievements as well as for his continued support of and active involvement at ASU. He has said “I feel very strongly about the work I do. I feel rewarded every day. I have never imagined that there was any other kind of work than public service. For me, it is an honor to be able to help refugees no matter how small the effort.”

This scholarship aims to recognize his contribution and support students at ASU who wish to travel and study abroad in Laos (and neighboring countries of Southeast Asia) who demonstrates an interest in Southeast Asia.
