Safeguarding Practices in Sport

About the Project

We are looking for highly motivated and dedicated PhD candidates who are interested in exploring safeguarding practices in sport. As a candidate, you will have the opportunity to conduct a PhD project in the field of Sports Coaching/Pedagogy and Safeguarding in Sport and contribute to the growing body of literature in this area.

This PhD project will explore social dynamics among individuals with diverse backgrounds in the context of sport. This includes examining the social relationships between coaches and athletes/children, (junior) athletes and (senior) athletes, females and males, and/or children and parents. The project will aim to provide critical analysis of potentially abusive practices and interaction patterns that may occur in sporting contexts, particularly from socio-cultural and organisational perspectives (e.g., sport-specific cultures, institutional/organisational structures, sports policies/systems, and societal values and norms).

Ideal candidates for this project may have a background in Sport Coaching/Pedagogy, Sociology (of Sport), Sport Management or related fields, with experience in using qualitative research methods. The School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences values diversity and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds. In the School’s diverse community where we believe in integration and support for everyone with different abilities, sexual orientations, ethnicity, race, faith and gender, you will actively uphold and respect these values.

Candidates who are interested in this project are kindly required to submit the following documents, directly to Dr Yoon Jin Kim ([Email Address Removed]).

1) Your CV, which highlights your educational qualifications and grades, and your (previous) experiences relevant to your PhD study.

2) A research proposal (1,200-1,500 words), which should include a literature review, a clear research aim and research questions, a theoretical framework, methodology, significance of the study and a reference list.
