The Department of Rural Health is a department within the Melbourne Medical School at the University of Melbourne. The Department is based in Shepparton, Ballarat, Bendigo (in partnership with Monash University and La Trobe University) and Wangaratta and has associations with more than 40 smaller rural towns in Victoria.

The Department works closely with the local community and healthcare partners to ensure that we remain relevant and connected. Our partnerships underpin our teaching and research. The Department of Rural Health is funded primarily by the Australian Government Department of Health’s Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training (RHMT) Program.

About the Role

The University of Melbourne was the first Australian medical school to launch the master’s level Doctor of Medicine (MD) qualification producing medical professionals ready to work in complex environments and become global leaders.  The Melbourne Medical School delivers the four-year MD, drawing on several departments including rural health and medical education.  

The Research and Evaluation Fellow will be based with the Department of Rural Health (Rural Clinical School) and work with the Director of Evaluation and Quality, Department of Medical Education, to undertake research focused primarily on the MD rural pathway that enables students to stay and train rural for the entire four years of medical school.  The appointee will develop and undertake research and evaluation activities informing the recruitment and retention of the rural medical workforce and the delivery of MD training in a rural context. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing a program of research focused on rural medical workforce recruitment, training and retention
  • Assisting in the development of research funding applications
  • Conducting literature reviews and contribute to research syntheses
  • Contributing to the academic research profile of the Department by producing academic publications on rural medical workforce development
  • Participating actively in communicating and disseminating research where appropriate

About You
You possess a demonstrated high-level organizational and administrative skills with a demonstrated ability to independently manage competing work priorities on tight timelines in a high-stakes context. You have a proven ability to develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

You will also have:

  • Level A: A postgraduate degree (Masters or a doctoral degree) or equivalent professional experience in medical education (including recruitment, training and retention of the rural medical workforce), medical education evaluation, or a relevant field
  • Level B: A doctoral degree or a postgraduate degree (Masters) and professional experience in medical education (including recruitment, training and retention of the rural medical workforce), medical education evaluation, or a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, deliver and manage medical or health education-focused evaluation and research projects
  • Advanced skills in data management using Excel and SPSS, including establishing and maintaining databases
