Department/Faculty Summary

The Office of Rural and Regional Health works closely with counterparts throughout the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and Rural and Regional communities in order to deliver medical education programs at all learner levels.

Position Summary

Working under the direction of the Director, ORRH and, where appropriate, the Associate Dean, Clinical Faculty, and other ORRH Rural Education Leads, the key responsibilities of the Rural Community Engagement Coordinator will be to steward the relationship between rural Clinical Faculty and the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FoMD) through the ORRH. This position will build effective working relationships with the medical clinics and preceptors in rural Alberta and will frequently meet with preceptors in the rural communities to review their required needs. Through these visits, the Rural Community Engagement Coordinator will develop and implement strategies to accomplish the ORRH vision for medical education.

Duties

The responsibilities of this position, as a key resource for rural physicians and community members are:

• Establishing regular correspondence with all rural academic site leads as key community representatives.
• Stewarding a list of all rural Clinical Faculty, corresponding as necessary with the ORRH Program Administrators, ICC Coordinator, Associate Dean Clinical Faculty, to ensure that the FoMD is kept current with respect to their status. This list will serve as a guide for such things as recognizing long-service preceptors, identifying first-5 years preceptors and maintaining current contact information for all rural preceptors.
• Facilitating the timely processing of all new clinical appointments for rural preceptors communicating with Department Chairs or their administrative staff as required.
• Ensuring timely collection of academic reporting documents in compliance with expectations established by Department Chairs.
• Scheduling and coordinating site visits between communities and ORRH staff as per an established schedule and/or on an as-needed basis.
• Identifying potential preceptors and/or communities that are not yet engaged with the FoMD. This may be done with the assistance of the Director ORRH, the ICC Coordinator, the Rural Family Medicine Program Directors or other community stakeholders.
• Flagging concerns regarding clinical faculty to the attention of the Director, ORRH.
• To travel, if and when required, to rural communities.

Minimum Qualifications

• BSc degree in suitable field, e.g. community development, social work; Minimum of 2 to 3 years of community development project work, rural experience is an asset. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
• Strong knowledge of educational institutions, hospital/clinical settings and/or medical education policies
• Experience in developing collaborative relationships
• Demonstrated communications skills, including demonstrated facilitation and group work skills
• Strong knowledge of and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and remote communication platforms
• Outstanding organizational skills
• Valid driver’s license and vehicle are required
• Ability to exercise a high degree of initiative and sound judgement including dealing with confidential and sensitive issues
• High degree of professionalism, confidentiality, maturity and diplomacy for interactions with a broad spectrum of issues including learners, preceptors and community organizations
