Position Summary
Position is responsible for coordinating the care of patients for the Adult Neuromuscle section throughout the continuum of care. Will provide direct patient care primarily through clinic test and procedures, phone interaction, phone call triage, scheduling tests/labs/treatment, communicating test/lab results, submitting orders (test, labs, referrals, infusion therapy plans), and implementing treatments. Manages the ordering and tracking compliance of controlled substances. Administrative responsibilities entail basic office duties including faxing, copying, and assisting with all forms/letters and/or renewals.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist providers with patient care plans, including order entry for diagnostic tests, therapy plans and referrals to outside sources. Discussion of diagnostic test/lab results with patients and other health care providers, explanation of procedures/tests, and patient education per Adult neurology provider guidelines. Refill medications including controlled substances per orders and Adult neuromuscular guidelines.
  • Assist NM physicians during clinic appointments. Assist with PFTs, skin biopsies, and collection of genetic testing samples if needed. Assist with communication with back office staff regarding authorization for add on exams. Provides direct patient care, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patients; completes health history and conveys findings to physician. 
  • Assists Medical Assistants and secretaries with advanced support on phone calls and in-basket messages for providers. Acts as a liaison and team leader by facilitating communication and coordination of care between patients, family members, facilities, and providers. Ability to problem solve questions, issues, and concerns from patients, their family and/or caregiver’s regarding upcoming procedures, diagnosis, and/or treatments per Adult Neuromuscular guidelines.
  • Assists providers and patients in regards to insurance, FMLA, comparable disability, driver’s licenses forms, etc. and formulates letters of necessity for patients’ medical equipment, medicines and legal matters. 
  • Performs a variety of nursing administrative duties, including compliance with environmental safety regulations, infection control standards, and quality assurance.
  • Maintains required HIPAA compliance, skills/competencies and participates in in-services, staff programs, continuing education and cross-training programs according to established standard and Washington University policies. Complies with OSHA, state and federal regulatory sources/standard. Participates in quality improvement activities to ensure appropriate clinical outcomes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three years of related medical experience.
  • Neurology experience.
  • Ability to triage and problem solve patient care questions and/or concerns.  
  • Experience in coordinating and managing all aspects of clinical patient care.
  • Demonstrates effective interactive communication skills with ability to work with physicians, patients, families, significant others, and support staff.
  • Effective interpersonal, organizational, and telephone skills, working knowledge of anatomy and physiology, fundamentals of medical terminology, and demonstrated knowledge/experience working with electronic medical records.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program with two years of nursing experience.
  • REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Current RN licensure in the state of Missouri and/or Illinois, depending on location, in accordance with the Compact Act. Basic Life Support Certification, Level C, or obtains certification within one month of employment. Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements.

Salary Range
$58,400.00 – $101,600.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one’s qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
