Researcher Position:

There is a vacancy for a 2-year Researcher position at the Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology (http://www.sars.no/ )in the research group of Dr. Timothy Lynagh. The position is funded by Sars Centre core funding. The Sars Centre belongs to the University of Bergen and is a partner of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) http://www.embl.org . The place of work will be at the Sars Centre. The preferred starting time is January 2023.

About the project/work tasks:

Work in the Lynagh group focuses on the evolution, function, and pharmacology of ligand-gated ion channels, receptors that mediate rapid communication between neurons, using molecular phylogenetics, mutagenesis, chemical biology, and electrophysiology. We are especially interested in invertebrate ion channels whose function is crucial to the evolution of the nervous system, and from which we can gain valuable biological and pharmacological insights. This project aims to characterize novel invertebrate channels (from, among others, annelid worms) using phylogenetics, molecular biology, and physiological experiments. It is expected that the successful applicant also collaborates with other members of the workgroup, including students and postdocs.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a Ph.D. (at least equivalent to a Norwegian Ph.D.) in neuroscience, pharmacology or a related field (e.g. biochemistry or biology) or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the Ph.D. has been awarded
  • Experience in assessing protein or cell membrane function is essential, using for example, but not limited to, mutagenesis, binding or other biochemical assays, expression analyses, electrophysiology, or structural biology. This should be evident in previous publications in respected journals
  • Experience with molecular biology is essential, including PCR, cloning, etc, also visible in previous publications
  • Evidence for collaborating with others and teaching junior lab members is essential
  • Proficient written and spoken English is essential, as evident in previous effective communication of results (e.g. articles, conferences) and, potentially, the interview
  • Experience with electrophysiology or worm (or other invertebrate) experiments or phylogenetic analysis will be viewed favourably
  • Some weekend duties may be required depending on project development, e.g for cell or animal culture
  • It is essential that the application cover letter, in English, explains your interest in this workgroup and how your skillset matches the position

We can offer:

  • A good and professionally challenging working environment
  • Salary as Researcher (code 1109) according to the state salary scale upon appointment. This currently constitutes of a gross annual salary of NOK 573.900. Further promotions are made according to length of service. For particularly highly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered
  • Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
  • Good welfare benefits

Applications in English must include:

  • A brief account of the applicant’s research interests and motivation for applying for the position
  • The names and contact information for two reference persons. One of these must be your main PhD supervisor
  • CV
  • Transcripts and diplomas and official confirmation that the doctoral thesis has been submitted
  • Relevant certificates/references
  • List of publications or other relevant scientific work
