If you are a microbiologist (preferably a parasitologist) who is eager to contribute to the prevention and control of zoonoses, as well as familiar with a wide range of laboratory techniques and who has an interest in livestock farming, this is the job for you!.

Job description

You will be working on scientific research and surveillance in the field of bacterial and parasitic zoonoses in livestock farming within a team of researchers and technicians. Within this team, you will be responsible for safeguarding the knowledge in the field of parasitic zoonoses, primarily within livestock farming, leading studies and contributing to innovation in the area of parasitology. Your role will include key responsibilities for the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for parasites, in which RIVM carries out conformation diagnostics for notifiable zoonotic parasites and quality assurance of Trichinella diagnostics at the slaughterhouse laboratories. Within the NRL, you will be the driving force behind its activities. Your work will focus on managing laboratory activities and analysing and reporting the results. You should enjoy converting research results into reports or scientific publications as well as presenting the research at national or international conferences.

Activities and duties

  • within the team, you will be the key point of contact on parasitology; you will keep your knowledge up to date and contribute to innovation in the field of parasitology.
  • you will be responsible for initiating and coordinating projects and supervising laboratory staff and PhD students.
  • you will be responsible for the NRL and for coordinating the implementation of audits and ring trials.
  • you will be responsible for analysing research results and incorporating the results into presentations for (inter)national conferences and scientific publications.

Requirements

  • You should have a university-level degree as a (veterinary) microbiologist, biologist, biomedical scientist or a comparable degree within the life sciences and you should preferably hold a PhD in this field;
  • You should have experience with conducting research in the field of microbiology/parasitology and preferably also with microscopy in parasite research;
  • You should have a good command of the English language, both orally and in writing;
  • You should have experience with drafting scientific publications, report and research proposals;
  • You should be able to work within a quality system; auditing experience is an advantage;
  • You should be willing to take on stand-by duty hours for the NRL.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: met uitzicht op onbepaalde tijd.

  • Salarisniveau: schaal 11
  • Maandsalaris: Min €3.503 – Max. €5.343 (bruto)
  • Dienstverband: Arbeidsovereenkomst voor bepaalde tijd met uitzicht op onbepaalde tijd
  • Contractduur: Temporary assignment for the duration of 12 months
  • Minimaal aantal uren per week: 32
  • Maximaal aantal uren per week: 36

RIVM Animal & Vector (D&V)

RIVM employs over 2200 people who are committed to advancing health and sustainability. The aim of the Centre for Zoonoses and Environmental Microbiology, which falls within the Domain of Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology, is to analyse and monitor health in the Netherlands in the area of infectious diseases. The Animal & Vector (D&V) department is made up of some 30 employees who work on signalling, risk assessment and prevention of zoonoses (infectious diseases that are transmissible between animals and humans). Within the department, you will primarily be working in the Livestock & Parasitology cluster: a collegial team with a high level of subject-specific expertise in which the various responsibilities are tackled collectively.
