Researcher in Theoretical Physics

Ref. No. SU FV-3593-22

at Nordita, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics . Closing date: 17 October 2022.

Nordita, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, was founded in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1957. It moved to the AlbaNova University Center in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2007, where it is jointly hosted by KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University. Research at Nordita covers a broad range of theoretical physics including astrophysics, biophysics, condensed matter physics, gravitation, cosmology and astroparticle physics, high-energy physics, and statistical physics/complex systems. The research activity of the local academic staff is supplemented by Nordita Scientific Programs, which bring together groups of leading experts to work on specific topics for extended periods. There is also ample opportunity for collaboration with faculty and research staff at local universities. Further information about Nordita can be found at www.nordita.org.

Project description
The central aim of the project is to uncover topological properties of higher-dimensional, e.g. two- and three-dimensional, quasicrystals. To this end, we employ an approach based on the correspondence between the parent perfect crystals and projected quasicrystals. This method will be applied to simple, but universal models to uncover new topological invariants. Their physical ramifications will be studied through the response of quasicrystals in terms of the boundary modes and lattice defects, such as dislocations and phasons. Finally, the robustness of the topological quasicrystals to various types of disorder, such as point-like non-magnetic and magnetic impurities, will be investigated, where new kinds of quantum-critical phenomena are expected to emerge, as a result of a nontrivial electronic topology of quasicrystals.

Main responsibilities
The position includes conducting a strong research program and interacting with colleagues and visitors at Nordita, Stockholm University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Uppsala University, and elsewhere in the Nordic countries. The successful candidate is expected to spend significant time at Nordita, KTH, and SU, building connections between condensed matter, astrophysics and high-energy groups.

Qualification requirements
Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
Special importance is given to research expertise shown, for example, through publications. The applicant’s ability to establish and develop collaborations both in research and education is of importance.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for 1 year. Start date as per agreement.
