Researcher in Informatics: Algorithmic foundations of data science

At the Department of Informatics ,  University of Bergen, there is a vacancy of up to two positions as researcher in algorithmic foundations of data science, associated the Center for Data Science (CEDAS ).  

Each position is for a fixed period of 2 years.  The available positions are associated with CEDAS through the European Research Council Grant “Lossy Preprocessing (LOPRE)” of Professor Saket Saurabh. 

About the Department

Digitalization of businesses, industry, public administration, and education makes informatics play an increasingly important role in the development of the society. Research and education in informatics are crucial for the digital transformation of the society to succeed. The Department of Informatics contributes to this through seven research groups that deliver research and education at a high international level in algorithms, bioinformatics, information security, machine learning, optimization, programming theory and visualization. We are also building up a group in computer science didactics. The department offers education for the future at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels. The department is in rapid growth regarding its number of students, research directions, and employees. We have today about 900 students, and 150 employees, among which 37 are faculty and 70 PhD candidates. We have established the Center for Data Science (CEDAS) as an important extension of our research and education activities.

About the project/work tasks:

All employees are expected to contribute to excellence through high-quality research.  For these positions we are looking for scientists who will contribute to the success and visibility of CEDAS and the LOPRE project.  Current scientific priorities of CEDAS include the research of algorithmic foundations of data science, visual data science, fundamentals of machine learning, data science in bioinformatics, behavioral data science, and statistical foundations.  A successful candidate for this position will conduct research within the algorithmic foundations of data science, as well as interacting with other CEDAS scientists.  We are looking for excellent scientists with background and experience in one or more of the following areas of computer science: approximation algorithms, dynamic algorithms, streaming algorithms, parameterized complexity, machine learning algorithms, as well as related fields

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must hold a Norwegian or equivalent PhD in Computer Science or Mathematics, or must have submitted their doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline.  It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded. 
  • Experience in algorithmic research is a requirement.  
  • It is a requirement that the candidate has demonstrated strength within algorithmic research with a solid publication record at the top conferences such as STOC, FOCS, SODA, ICALP, SoCG, PODC, or equivalent top venues. 
  • Experience in data science, in particular with focus on the algorithmic foundations of data science, but also on some of the other CEDAS research directions will be beneficial. 
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured way and have the ability to cooperate with others. 
  • Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English. 
  • Personal and relational qualities will be considered, as well.  Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

  • Salary at pay grade 62 (code 1109).This constitutes a gross annual salary of NOK 573 900 according to the state salary scale. For particularly highly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered. Further promotions are made according to length of service.
