Researcher: Analysis of ship contaminant particles in marine environmental samples, Department of Marine Sciences, University of Gothenburg, Sweden

Contaminant particles from ships (exhaust combustion particles and ship paint) are of environmental concern for the marine ecosystems. Since this is considered to be a potential environmental risk, it would be of great importance to be able to sample, and analyse this poorly understood form of pollution.

The position will contribute to several ongoing research projects especially the UGOT Challenge center FRAM, with special focus on complex compositions. It will ship scubber effluents and environmental waters.

Qualifications

Requirements

We are looking for a candidate that is used to work independently and is driven.

Previous experiences of the relevant spectroscopic and/or microscopy methods is a prerequisite. Experience of scanning electron microscopy with automated EDX for environmental samples is judged to be a necessary qualification.

Additional merits

Some experience of aquatic environmental systems or processes is desirable. Specific experience of analysis of especially challenging environmental particles, ideally ship exhaust or paint particles is an advantage. Other useful experiences could include light scattering techniques or laboratory work on how micro and nanoparticles behave in natural environments. Documented skills about sample preparation and sample processing for the techniques listed above is also relevant, as to some extent field work experience. Finally, extensive experience of adequate data management is an advantage.
