Position Summary

The Department of Forestry at Michigan State University invites applications for a full-time Forest Research Technologist to act as an integral team member in support of forest management and research by performing routine cultural operations, collecting data, and operating and maintaining equipment in support of forested lands and facilities and assisting with outreach and research events. The position is based at the W. K. Kellogg Experimental Forest in Augusta, Michigan.  Work will also be performed at various forested properties around Michigan’s lower peninsula, to which transportation will be provided when necessary.  This is a great career opportunity to promote the mission of one of the oldest forestry programs in the United States.  This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, end-dated (12 months), non-union position, with extension possible depending on continued funding availability.

The Research Technician will assist with forest research and management, facility operations and outreach programs.  Specifically: Assist in collecting and compiling data; operate equipment such as trucks, tractors with attachments such as chippers, tree planters and mowers, skid steers with multiple attachments, and log loaders to maintain research projects; conduct cultural operations including planting and cultivating; harvest forest crops including felling, bucking, herbicide application, limbing, pruning and processing of trees using chainsaws and other power equipment in and/or near research plots; move, load, haul and unload supplies, materials, tool and equipment; independently conduct maintenance of research equipment at satellite sites; maintain forestry research grounds and facilities; order supplies and equipment in order to maintain inventories; assist with research open house event; conduct professional and academic field-based tours and events at the research station; and assist with projects and initiatives in support of the mission of the unit.

On-site rental housing may be available at W. K. Kellogg Experimental Forest.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or other related field; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques in the specific or related field; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job may require the appropriate pesticide applicator’s registration/certification and/or experience working with potentially dangerous research animals.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Science, or similar discipline from and accredited institution is strongly preferred.
  • One to three years of professional forestry experience including cruising, timber sales prep and compliance, and marketing (preferably in the Lake States Region).
  • Experience designing, implementing, and maintaining forestry research projects.
  • Commercial Pesticide Applicator License or ability to obtain within six months of hire date.
  • Prescribed fire or wildland fire suppression experience.
  • Experience assisting with outreach events and educational workshops.

Summary of Physical Demands

This position requires frequent lifting of 26-75 pounds; long periods of standing, walking and working on uneven ground; and working outside in cold, hot, humid and inclement weather. 

Summary of Health Risks

Position may include exposure to pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, as well as insects, wildlife, plant-based irritants (poison ivy, thorny brush) and other outdoor allergens.
