JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State College of Medicine, Clinical Specimen Laboratory, in Hershey, PA is seeking a candidate for a Research Technologist. The primary purpose is to support a newly developed growing laboratory. Clinical Specimen Processing Core (CSPC) Laboratory is an institute-wide initiative that currently supports general clinical research studies by processing, storing, and shipping biological samples. The need for additional support is due to the attainment of the Cancer Institute Clinical Trials studies and numerous COVID studies

This position provides direct support to the CSPC laboratory manager and preforms all of the daily activities necessary to providing a core service dedicated to assist internal Penn State Investigators more effectively and efficiently conduct research.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following: 

  • Process biological specimens for clinical research by centrifugation, aliquoting numerous samples of serum, plasma, buffy coats, urine and/or other body fluids.
  • Shipping biological samples when necessary.
  • Retrieve remnant samples form Clinical Labs for a current Biorepository.
  • Enter samples into a data base, process and store until batch shipment to sponsor.
  • Help manager to review studies and lab manuals to determine budget information requested in STAR.
  • Create study specific lab slips for processing, storing and shipping all studies.
  • Enter billing into iLab system.
  • Perform weekly maintenance including temperature monitoring and recording.
  • Perform CLIA waived testing for urine pregnancy and urinalysis for participants drug administration when required. Follow CLIA regulations for quality control testing and specific lab Standard Operation Procedures.
  • Able to work independently, and manage laboratory in supervisors absence. Able to change dayshift start times when needed.

This position typically requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher plus 1 year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

This is a limited-term position funded for one year from date of hire, with possibility of refunding.

  • Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background Check  
  • Pennsylvania Child Abuse History
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal Background Check
