JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Penn State College of Medicine, Irvin S. Zubar Surgical Research Laboratory within the Department of Surgery and Division of Plastic Surgery, in Hershey, PA is seeking a Research Technologist with significant experience working in stem cell biology, regenerative medicine and/or vascular biology.
They will manage multi-year projects with collaborators on various PSU campuses; contribute to determining feasibility of goals and objectives; responsible for assuring quality, cost effectiveness and timeliness of assigned projects. They will participate in formulating research methods and suggesting options for improving quality and recommending solutions; identify problems and related technical issues leading to long-term solutions by identifying technical approaches for problem solving. They will coordinate data collection and screening and verify data; conduct analysis of data, interpret and implement research methodology based on outcome of analysis. They may be responsible for operation of a specialized research area or laboratory independently and/or with consultation with the PI. They may act as liaison with other departments, collaborators, or organizations to answer questions or provide advice on research projects/experiments. They will train users in equipment operation and research techniques, explain and demonstrate technology and equipment capabilities, operations limitations and outcomes. They will mentor part-time staff, students, and Residents in the development of technical scientific skills. They will author/co-author on papers, grant submissions, presentations and reports. They may supervise lower level staff, part-time employees and/or students. They may also perform duties identified in lower-level(s).
Critical skills utilized in this position include methods of molecular biology (RT-PCR, siRNA and over-expression, Western blot, ELISA, immunofluorescence/ immunohistochemistry) in isolated cell systems. Prior experience with transgenic animal models and human samples are desirable. In this position it is expected that the technologist will be able to work independently, with guidance but not close supervision in developing, designing and conducting one or more small or moderately complex research projects or experiments in line with plan, reviews progress and evaluates results. Expertise with all or some of the following would be beneficial: cell culture, animal studies, stem cell isolation techniques, microscopy, flow cytometry, 3D printing, protein analysis (e.g. Western blotting), RNA-seq and biomaterials. Occasional trips to University Park may be necessary.
TYPICAL EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
10+ years related experience
Bachelor’s Degree or higher; Master’s Degree preferred
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience
This is a limited-term position funded for one year from date of hire, with possibility of refunding.
