Job Summary
The position will require the incumbent to perform a variety of complex tasks of a technical nature in a dynamic & fast paced changing work environment. Protein Expression & Production will be the dominant focus. The work performed will provide services to academic labs at UBC, throughout Canada & abroad. Importantly, the candidate will have the aptitude to maintain their responsibilities at the highest level in a busy environment to provide the highest quality of service for the facilities’ end-users.

Organizational Status

Reports to and works closely with the Manager of the UBC Antibody, Biologics & Protein Engineering Core
Work Performed

The responsibilities will include and extend from the following:

  • Prepping samples;

  • Running instruments and assays;

  • Coordinating with researchers and their incoming samples/experiments;

  • Advising on best practices for preparing samples/experiments;

  • Organizing and standardizing the handling and recording of samples and associated data;

  • Operating tasks utilizing good documentation and standardized operations;

  • Working with Supervisors contributes to develop, revise, improve and maintain lab manuals, protocols, validation reports, workflows and SOPs;

  • Efficient organization and communication of activities for downstream processing of samples;

  • Planning and performing experiments, utilizing complex procedures or techniques; troubleshoots problems;

  • Discussing results, assists in analyzing and interpreting experimental results or research data by performing tasks, such as, assembly, compilation, and summary of statistical and other data;

  •  Assisting in general shipping and receiving, placing orders requested by lab members, tracking shipments and receiving and inventorying orders;

  • Utilizing standard techniques and protocols to perform various technical tasks; and

  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Failure to follow procedures and direction will result in incorrect data production and will result in the delay of production of research services to end user.
Supervision Received

Works under general supervision in carrying out familiar phases of duties and responsibilities; receives instructions during orientation and on subsequent new assignments or changes in procedures.
Supervision Given

May distribute work assignments to employees at lower classification level and students.
Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated real-world experience with Protein Engineering, Expression & Production in Bacterial & Mammalian systems is highly essential.

  • Undergraduate degree in the Biological Sciences or related field with a concentration in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology & Genetics is preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability & experience in laboratory practices including Protein Expression & Production, molecular biology, biochemistry, and computer knowledge; DNA/RNA extraction, Protein & DNA electrophoresis & related techniques, Mammalian Cell Culture, Protein/Antibody Purification, Protein Modification/Conjugation Techniques, Cloning & Protein Expression, Flow Cytometry, Elisa, Immunoprecipitation, PCR, qPCR; use of Excel, Word, PowerPoint etc.

  • Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, organizational skills required; ability to prioritize, and work effectively under time pressure; ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail; ability to work both independently and within a team environment.  Required to work a flexible schedule, stat holidays.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret data, determine implications, and provide recommendations.

  • Ability to effectively use job-specific software at a high level (e.g., Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel).

  • Willingness to work with technology and learn new protocols.

  • Reliable and committed to projects and its responsibilities.

  • Accountable in all instances.

  • Strong independent critical thinking and problem solving.
