Position Summary
The Genome Technology Access Center at the McDonnell Genome Institute (GTAC@MGI) was formed in 2019 and represents a union of the institution’s two major genomics research facilities. GTAC@MGI provides access in a fee-for-service mode to all its genomics technologies and services to researchers at Washington University and beyond.
This position is in our clinical next-gen sequencing laboratory. This position assists with the technical aspects of clinical testing including documentation and preparation of materials. The Laboratory is responsible for the preparation of DNA for sequencing through the operation of the sequencer. We currently use the Illumina NovaSeq.

Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists with research studies, experiments, and assays, including specimen processing and NextGen library preparation (automated and manual technology), preparation of solutions and set-up and maintenance of equipment.
  • Performs data entry, maintains data files on research, and documentation of all QC results.
  • Prepares capture hybridization and performs NovaSeq operations.
  • Complies with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.
  • Ensures lab conditions and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained in accordance with established CAP accreditation procedures.
  • Assists with general lab maintenance and cleaning.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ASCP certification.
  • Experience with genomic research studies, data collection, and Next Generation sequencing.
  • Multitasking skills.
  • Experience with data management systems and software, particularly LIMs systems and Microsoft Excel; comfortable with Microsoft Windows applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and communicate with laboratory staff and investigators.
  • Ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports, as well as the management and integrity of data.
  • Working knowledge of computer software and general lab equipment. 

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and up to one year of experience in a laboratory setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling four years.

R06-H

Salary Range
$16.08 – $25.12 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one’s qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
