This 13-month post, available for immediate start, offers an exciting opportunity for a dedicated, highly motivated technician to join the lab of Dr. Claire Thornton, and directly contribute to a project examining metabolic stress in neonatal brain injury.

Mitochondrial dysfunction lies at the centre of the development of neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury and perturbations in mitochondrial fission and fusion were recently identified following insult. This project will investigate the regulation and function of the mitochondrial pro-fusion protein Optic Atrophy (OPA)1, to determine whether protecting OPA1 activity following hypoxia-ischaemia will provide additional neuroprotection for infants where existing therapies are insufficient.

As a member of Dr. Thornton’s lab, you will be responsible for providing research support, running lab protocols (particularly in cell culture) and maintaining colonies. You will provide training and support for new starters and students in the lab as well as day-to-day lab management including health and safety.

A successful applicant will have a BSc or equivalent in a biological science, wide-ranging experience of cell culture techniques, possess excellent organisation skills, and enjoy being part of a team. Previous experience in animal handling and / or a Home Office personal licence would be highly advantageous.

Closing Date for applications is 25th November 2022, with online interviews expected during the week of 6th December 2022. The position is available immediately.

The RVC values diversity and is committed to
the equality of opportunity. Balancing both the needs of the business with those of

possible.
