Research technician (0.8-1.0 FTE) at the Department of Bionanoscience

A 0.8-1.0 FTE position (32 – 40 hours) is available for a research technician to support two groups at the Department of Bionanoscience at TU Delft: Kristin Grußmayer and Gijsje Koenderink. Start date as soon as possible.

The Grußmayer lab develops advanced 3D light microscopy methods to perform quantitative studies in live cells to answer fundamental questions in molecular and cell biology e.g., to understand neurodegenerative diseases. We combine label-free and super-resolution fluorescence microscopy. The Koenderink lab uses light microscopy methods to study the cytoskeleton of mammalian cells and its role in cell mechanics and migration. We use confocal fluorescence microscopy coupled with advanced biophysical methods such as atomic force microscopy. The Grußmayer and Koenderink labs work together in a collaborative project aimed at using new super-resolution methods for resolving cytoskeletal interactions in cells. Both teams are highly interdisciplinary with a mix of scientists with backgrounds ranging from biophysics to optics, often with little training in cell culture work.

You will support both groups with 50:50% of your time. In the Grußmayer lab, you will be responsible for keeping all wet lab activities running smoothly and you will be in charge of mammalian cell culture activities. In the Koenderink lab, you will primarily be responsible for establishing protocols for cloning and production of stable GMO’s  and methods for characterization. Both groups seek help in establishing new dye-labelling strategies for (live-cell) imaging, also in the context of their joint project.

This is a laboratory-based position, but the successful candidate will also be expected to provide input in setting up and optimizing new experimental designs. We seek applicants who are well-organized, diligent, creative, flexible, and curious to learn new techniques. In addition, we look for applicants who enjoy collaborating within a diverse and international team, training scientists and students, and working on varying activities.

Main functions

  • Managing wet lab activities (introduction and training of new group members, coordinating ordering, inventory and lab safety)
  • Conducting and providing support for cell culture and light microscopy experiments
  • Providing input into new experimental designs
  • Cloning / Producing stable GMO’s (including optimization of transfection/transduction/lentivirus production, CRISP-Cas technology)
  • Characterizing GMO’s using methods such as Western blotting, qPCR, FACS, and proteomics
